I don't think that either of us heard them.

I'd be interested in finding another pair, if for nothing but a conversation piece, because they're so damn WRONG looking. :p

    Interesting how did they sound?

I didn't go listen to them, but the guy that had them said they went quick. He seems to pick up alot of vintage (the entry level 80's stuff) like at flea markets and off CL and resells it, nothing at all worth grabbing imo. I honestly believe he's making a living off of it, type in Mount Prospect and you'll see tons of ads come up for Chicago.

When I think of (good) speakers......Sony doesn't even come into the equation.

Sony engineered a line of speakers in the 90's that are very interesting. I would love to get my hands on any part of that line for a listen. Non-parallel sided cabinets and the whole nine yards. M-9, M-7, M-5, M-3 maybe. They were NOT cheap either. TOTL was $5k/pair if I recall. Might be SS instead of M. No brain left here.

Yamaha also had some pretty well revered speakers (NS-1000 or somesuch)....but the same thing, 99.9% of it was garbage, which is what you are going to find on CL.

I remember reading about them in one of my dad's old magazines. I'd definitely try a set of them with no hesitation.

I've heard the Sony's with the square woofers.

Once you get over the fact that you have square woofers, you realize that all you have is a **** sounding pair of speakers, with square woofers.

You are talking about Sony's APM series of speakers. Here's a pic of the Sony APM-77

    apm-77w-h.jpg

In the 80s, Sony also made a series of good-sounding transmission line speakers that was marketed by mail-order retailer Crutchfield. This eries of transmission line speakers were manufactured in the US.

    Those actually look interesting.

The Sony SS-K series all have tapered back-ends, and thus form no parallel surfaces within the speakers. They were retailed at the now-defunct Circuit City chain, but most people just can't get past the Sony name tags on them. I remember there were 2 floorstanding models and a bookshelf model, along with a center channel. When the SS-K series was finally being cleared out due to the stigma of their Sony namesake, there was quite a rush to get these speakers at a discount....including myself. Here's a professional review of the Sony SS-K70ED (ED stands for Extended Definition....tie-in marketing with the introduction of SACD)

Towards the end of the APM series, Sony used the technologies on every kind of speakers....from boombox speakers to those powered ones connected to Discmen.

I'd love to get a pair of Sony APM speakers, except that no one will work on the complicated refoaming process of the square woofer/midrange.

Hey Danny, the pair I linked on the older thread had the same looking tweeter but different midrange+woofer. I'll see if I can find a pic somewhere for ya....

Edit: Same exact pair as shown here, they were $50 bucks in absolutely mint-condition.

I'd have purchased them just to see how they sound.

I still have, and use, a pair of Sony floorstanding speakers from 1987 (my first speakers). While not audiophile-approved, they survived quite a good amount of sonic abuse and still function perfectly til this day.
