I have a friend who is buying a new Sony BDP-S5000ES.

He's a dentist so he can always afford neat stuff, but does not have great technical skills so I always end up helping him hook up his A/V goodies.

He told me that player has the ability to display his email on his flat screen, and I'm not familiar enough with Sony BDP's to know how that could be possible.

Does anyone know how a Sony BDP might be configured to do this?

I just skimmed the manual for that model (http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-documents.pl?mdl=BDPS5000ES) and I don't see anything about E-Mail or internet browsing outside of BDLive disks.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

I wonder if he is just confusing where he saw someone cable their their laptop to the VGA port on their flat screen.

The only Sony Blu ray that can do internet streaming is the new BDP N460, and it doesn't do e mail. I don't know of any player that does.

I personally have a PS3 and it is connected to my network via it's included wireless card, but only to handle updates. I do know it has a browser, but think it is limited to proprietary content. I may be wrong and will dig a bit deeper into it, but my buddy is talking specifically about the BDP-S5000ES.

The ps3 browser is a general purpose browser. Nothing limits it to proprietary content. It may have some limitations in compatibility for specific website media plug-ins etc. But isn't designed to only access Sony content.

I've discovered the PS3 has a fairly robust browser once you learn how to get to its feature set.

As long as you have web browser enabled email retrieval, the PS3 would work. I'm not sure if the BDP-S5000ES has the same ability to go online.

A wireless USB mouse/keyboard setup would make using a PS3/flat screen combination almost as convenient as a PC or laptop.

i have a wireless keyboard for the ps3 and it still sucks trying to navigate the net. it's got the built-in trackball and i never use it. but it is alot better than using the ps3 controller.
