Moved my front door yesterday

Our front door sat recessed about 5' back from the edge of the house making for a cave of sorts. We poured a concrete step there years ago when we put in our driveway. A couple weeks ago I thought, move the front door out.

Last week I did the demo work. Removed the slate flooring, some overhead stucco and the siding and poured an 8" reinforced concrete step in front of the existing step to extend it out a bit farther. A few days ago I did the rough framing and yesterday I moved the door.

Next is to reroute some electrical and run a new line for a new front porch light, move the doorbell and then drywall. The old front door frame will get an arch like I did with the entryway I made through a wall a couple years ago.

Fun huh? Looks good so far.

As we sat watching a movie the other night my wife told me she always hated the stone fireplace at the house. When she came home the next day guess what was gone? She freaked when she saw the wall stripped to the studs and saw what I had planned for a new fireplace with a new mantel, columns and a tiled hearth. Then I got all the sex I wanted for that day.

Here's some updated pics as of today. Having this week off and nothing but rainy days I got re-motivated. The project is near completion. Just some minor patch work, sanding, throw on some texture and then paint.

The front door used to be at this first archway.

This door to the left goes into the garage, to make it all match nicely I built a facade arch just for the interior. Inside the garage it's still squared off.

I put these knock-outs in the walls. I have two large ornate candle holders that will go in with those led fake candles.

The gain was what......for a mudroom entrance type of thing? Or just to eliminate the outward facing cave?

    As always, looks good......

Several reasons actually. To do away with the 6' recessed door cave on the outside which was nothing but a bug haven. To get the front door away from the garage door, they constantly were in the way of each other and a much nicer looking entry.

    Good deal! Nice work!

I get to cut two holes in my ceiling this weekend. One for a whole house fan, the other for a telescoping attic ladder.

That's one of the projects on the list to tackle for me too. But unlike you and fortunately for me, my basement is already finished with stud work and everything. However, unlike you as well but nearly as fortunate, my framing in my basement is covered with lame 70's plywood paneling and horrendous linoleum tiles. Plus, there is a bathroom down there that has seen better days. So I have a pile of work ahead of me on that front as well.

    WTH is a basement??? :D

I don't think I've ever seen a house with a basement here. My relatives in Pueblo have one in their house and it's awesome...

That's because the topsoil in TX is just one level softer than concrete.

I know this because golfing and divots in the state of TX are life altering events.

ahhh, got it. I wasn't really thinking as too why or what, more just something I could do and I love doing stuff like this.

That's why I bought some more windows, yet another project. Then I plan to move on to the rest of the doorways in the house and make them all arched. I love the look and now all the doorways need it.

I went to a friends house and fell in love with his arched doors. He has high ceilings and the doors were solid wood, about 9' tall in the center and heavy as could be. Very impressive!
