which speakers to replace LS70s?

I think my LS70s have bitten the dust after 15 years, so what should I look at for replacements?

Anything in the current Polk Audio line or should I go elsewhere?

I don't want 'home theater' - just old fashioned listening to music. All kinds of music - everything from opera and classical to jazz to folk and 'rock' (whatever that means).

Any advice on where to start? thanks.

One of the LS70s has started to make a raspy vibrating noise when music is playing. I've checked all the wiring and can't see any problems. I called Polk and they told me there are no parts available and the speaker cannot be repaired now.

I don't really know what my budget is - less than $5000 but I'd like to start by knowing what will give me comparable sound to the LS70s. And then what are the steps up from that. I don't want to go lower in sound quality - I'd rather wait until I can afford more.

if you like your LS70's.. just look for another pair on Ebay or Audiogon. if you're looking to try something newer.. there are TONS of speakers out there.

    good luck.

With a budget like $5k, I would spend some serious time listening to a variety of different speakers.

I have LS90's and love them, I can understand you attachment to them. I haven't heard the LSi's but they are well regarded speakers.

What sort of amp are you driving the LS70's with?

I am real partial to the SDA and RTA lines. I like my RTA 11t's with RDO 194 tweets better than the LS 90's I had. and only have 250 in them.

you also might check into re-gluing the cabinets and ports, it could be the cause of the vibration noise. or a blown driver, if so you can find used good ones on e-bay.

Interesting. I would love to try some RTA11t's or 15t's. I do love my 90's though.

I would for sure consider replacing them with LSI 15's and a good amp. That would leave you lots of money left over.

I replaced my LS50's with LSI 9's a few years ago and the improvement in clarity and sound stage was impressive to say the least. If you already have a good sub, the 9's may be a good choice too.

I would also give the B&W 800 series a good listen, they have a remarkable life like quality that can stop you in your tracks. Give a listen to the 804S. They sell for about #4500 a pair.
