My room is about 12x16 (width). Will 7.1 really make a difference?

Agreed. I had 7.1 in my HT which is a bit bigger than your room. I couldn't really tell a difference.

Pick concealer up an Emotiva t-shirt for his present. He'll love it:p:D

For me I think it's worth it. Have a pretty large room with the back speakers mounted relatively high. Blu rays designed for it really let the bullets fly and add awesome effects. Also, the best part is for gaming. It's so easy to tell exactly where people are behind you that it works as a big advantage. I suppose it all depends on what you are looking to do and how much/what you are going to use as the rear speakers.

Yes it is if you buy my onkyo 607 lol

You could run a dolby LLZ setup by using the two front height speakers and have way better than 5.1 .You can have the choice to use different speakers because its not related to the sonic soundstage of the other 5 speakers

You don't have the space needed for the sound to properly be dispersed. Don't waste your time or $$$.

For that matter is 9.2 worth it? Probably a second sub wouldn't hurt...

We're already up to 9.2! What's next.....I've already described the ultimate speaker system which would consist of 6 flat membranes that were the same size as your floor, ceiling, and 4 walls (6 planar sound panels) and Monster subs---as many as possible in all four corners and in your floor (lots and lots in your floor).

You know, the womb experience...then we'd have to upgrade the visual experience to match this so you'd want an imax like 3-d projector and maybe a redesign of part of your room into an I-max screen!

Am I there yet! Then you'd want Star Trek like Voice recognition as your UNIVERSAL remote and photon torpedo level amplifier power to fire all that up!!!

The future....modernity...an endlessly forward looking dynamism that cannot be stopped or slowed down.

I remember over a year ago reading something about Japan pushing what they called something like "ultra high def" or some crap... which supposedly would allow for up to 22.2 channels...

    Nope, don't do it.

A cramped 7.1 would be a waste of money and would sound bad compared to a properly setup 5.1 system.

I agree 100%, stick to a well setup 5.1 system. It will sound way better than a cramped up 7.1 anyday.

    My room is quite small at approximately 9' w (maybe 10' can't recall) X 14' l X 8' h and i MUCH preffer the 7.1 to 5.1. Thankfully my AVR can do "extended surround" so i can even "stretch" 5.1 > 7.1 :o

    5.1 is lacking IMO :o

But take it from everyone else, i don't know squat :o I'm shure when i get into a bigger room it will sound much better but for now that's how it is :(

put it in, I did, of course I actually know what I am doing.

no, you dont need it, of course I know best.

I do use 7.2 though in the RTT, ooohed and aaaaahed everybody at our Club event who demoed it so there you go, of course it always sounds best when there is an actual back surround track discreet to those speakers, not many of those for your generic movie, the real answer is it is system dependent and software, genre dependent, a simple room size is know way to judge, Polk has some extensive web pages and written materials for your study and review, understand though a surround speaker is designed for a type of sound, example, if a helio is flying from back to front over your head or a gun shot comes directly from behind you you want the direct driver, if you want swirling winds as the sandman is born you want surround has to do with speaker phasing. Either way though your going to be enjoying your movie soundtracks so pick it and stick it and the buttered popcorn and bon bons roll.

If your speakers are calibrated properly, it shouldn't matter how big the room is.
I really enjoy my 7.1 setup, but so far the only 7.1 I get is tv, while using Pro Logic IIx. In the next couple of weeks, I'll have a BD player, and will have the ability of 7.1 discreet, with certain BD movies. I can hardly wait............... :)

Dolby Pro Logic is quite smart, it does an ok job for matrixing 2 channel source into 5 channel with dialogue in centre and background sound at back. so i assume it will do a good job matrixing 2 rear channels into 4 channels.
so i guess a good properly positioned 7.1 setup (additional 2 identical rears) would not be worse than 5.1 in any 5.1 soundtrack. you get rear positioning by adding 1 more rear centre (6.1)

so i guess the issue is u dont gain a lot by spending money for an extra pair of speakers. and u lose more if they are not propoerly set up.

Wow. Only one minor issue, it should be 22.5. 2 subs isn't enough for 22 speakers. :D

Couldn't agree more, I figure if you need 2 with 7 channels now... logically you would need at least 6 if you more than triple the regular speakers.

well to totally ensure the absence of any possible bass node cancellation four in the floor with four more in ceiling would cover the vertical as well as the horizontal,

every theater I have visited has way more than seven speakers in it along with a bunch of sticky old juju beads.
