USB on a processor or AVR

So, I have a question that i've been thinking about.. unfortunately I can't test this myself b/c my AVR doesn't have USB support, I'd have to go up to a 1065 to have it... I know with a USB port you can hook up most non ipod mp3 players and even thumbdrives to access audio files and play them so I assume the avr has the processing to handle it mp3, mp4, .wav, etc.. my question is do you know if you can hook up an external HD via USB. it would act like a thumbdrive but it obvioulsy has an exponentially greater capacity. Has anyone tried this at all?

well after doing a little more research I might have answered my own question. I looked up both the yammy 1065 and 2065 manuals and both state they can read off of usb mass storage devices except for HDD so I guess you can't... though it will read audio files off of a thumbdrive which uses flash memory as opposed to an active drive.
concealer I think the AVR or processor would be able to use a DAC to convert the computer files for play included in its software.. it looks like you can scan through the files via on screan GUI on both systems.
It would be nice if you could set up a 1 terrabyte HDD though via USB to an AVR or pre/pro as it would eliminate the need of connecting a PC or laptop via HDMI to the AVR or TV.
being able to do that would be a smaller footprint and i think more convienent.Main 2ch -

You still can, actually. There's Media HDD enclosures that have built in navigation programs, and will output to a reciever via USB, RCA, or digital.I don't read the newsssspaperssss because dey aaaallllllllll...... have ugly print.

Sure, check out Newegg, they have a few at a decent price.
I think someone recently here bought one, but for the life of me i can't remember who, or exactly what they bought, so that's a pretty useless anecdote i guess.I don't read the newsssspaperssss because dey aaaallllllllll...... have ugly print.

I have hooked up my WD 250g HDD to my Pioneer SC-05, so yesI refuse to argue with idiots, because people can't tell the DIFFERENCE!
