Based on the specifications in the links above, can someone tell me whether the Sumiko Blue Point No.2 Cartridge will work with the phono stage of the VTL 5.5?

Thanks,

Mike

it will work, it's just that your phono stage can handle a MC cartridge with a much lower ouput, but yes you can use it.

+1 That cartidge and phono stage should work fine together.

Yep, it would work. Its a high output MC and they typically work perfect with most MM phono stages. You would use it with the MM setting on your pre. The output might be a tad lower than it would be with a standard 4mv MM cartridge, but that's OK because the impedance is a match. It wouldn't work right with the MC setting though.

    solid,
How many tubes and what kind do you have in the 5.5?

What do you think of it so far?

I knew it would only take a bit of time for you to find your way down the rice paper back to the tube path.

I would'nt mind getting some VTL gear myself.

Enjoy the gear and the sounds or visa-versa.

Waiting for you to write what you hear with the pre and the cartridge.

    let me add,

the thing about a cartridge is you never know for sure how it is going to sound until you hear it, so try not to give up your old cartridge and some dealers will let you return it if you just do not like it.

Holy crap. I have exactly the same chassis with a whole lot less going on inside.

I don't have the phono pre option and only 2 pairs of tubes.

What is with those big **** caps?

    Very sexy btw :)

Interesting, I don't know about anything in there. Maybe I just lucked out. I hope the guy didn't do some DIY mods.

hi-fi baby, I see many things I like, the toroids could easily run an amp, nicely isolated one for each channel as well, the size and use of the capacitor banks will allow for transient speed and plenty of power reserve for impedance swing, bandwith, I bet she goes deep and back to high in a flash, pc boards nice and tidey circuit, and of course the tubey goodness. Extra tubes are added for your phono stage per the spec. I do not own VTL, I suppose the different caps are for that as well but call VTL and ask them.

    enjoy.

Edit--did you ask the seller if he upgraded the caps???

I said "exactly" the same. I have the 2.5. The chassis is the same but the front plate is all silver. I like the look of yours.

Inside mine is quite sparse. I only have 1 transformer IIRC. I will try to get a pic or two posted in my VTL 2.5 thread so you can have a look.

There is a comparison just below the listing for your pre :

    http://www.vtl.com/pages/preamplifiers.html#TL-5.5

If you are half as happy with your 5.5 as I am with my 2.5 you will be a very happy guy. :)

Yeah, they "look" the same minus the cool faceplate. Same front-panel layout etc. Quite different on the inside.

Did you ever listen to any ARC stuff as a comparison?

No, I haven't found any ARC gear affordable enough yet for me to snag. P

    Hey,

Got the TT working! It sounds awesome! The phono section of the 5.5 definitely seems to have a better sound and quieter background than my old JD-9A.

    Regards,

    Mike
