Howdy folks,
Since I have bitten by the turntable bug, I don't hardly want to listen to cds anymore, which is both a good and bad thing. About the middle of last week, my Tecnics SL-1200 starting developing a short in the phono cable and specifically the right channel went out completely. I have a spare phono cable, so I proceeded to take my turntable apart to remove the old cable and solder on the replacement. Unfortunately I could not get the thing apart enough to get to the phono leads. I am pretty decently electrically inclined and very mechanically inclined, but this thing was given me fits. I decided to quit while I was ahead, put everything back together, and leave the cable replacement to a pretty decent electronics repair shop here in town. The only problem is, the elctronic repair shop is notoriously backed up and I knew that it would be at least 4 to 6 weeks before I got my table back. The thought of doing without vinyl for this long killed me, so I immediately got on Craigs List to see what I could find. I just wanted to get something that would get me by until I could get my 1200 back.
To my pleasure I found a ProJect 1.2 table a little over an hour a way for what seemed to be a fair price. When I got to the gentlemen's apartment I learned that he was moving to Portland OR from Jacksonville Fl and was just moving his dog, himself, some clothes, and his car-that was it. He said he had to get rid of all of stuff. He sold me the table (In excellent shape), an Ortofon OM-30 cart, OM-10 cart, ProJect phono box preamp, various different cleaning brushes, stylus cleaners, fluids, cables, de-static guns, various other claning supplies, and this is the best part, his entire vinyl collection for $350. There has to be over 300-400 albums in there. The vast majority where 33s, but there were a few 12 inch 45s and picture records in there also. Nearly evey record is in outstanding shape. I occasionally may find a small scratch on one, but you really have to look. The guy took great care of his vinyl. Artist include Floyd, Zepplin, The Stones, Beatles, Rush, Cream, Clapton, Bad Company, Boston, Yes, Stevie Ray Vaughn, BB King, Van Halen, Miles Davis, John Coltraine, Thelonious Monk, Nat King Cole, Sinatra, Charlie Parker, Herbie Hanckock, Lois Armstrong, Ella FItzgerald, J.S. Bach, Bethoven, to name a few.
The thing about it is I have been going through a tough break-up with my ex fiance that has stressed me to hell and back. A find like this couldn't have came at a better time. There's nothing like some great tunes, especially vinyl to get you out of the doldrums and forget all about the other craziness. I truly believed the lord blessed me and was looking out for me with this find. That may sound crazy, but the timing sure was there. Regardless of how one feels about those sort of thins, I am in vinyl bliss, so I guess that's the important thing! I want to give many thanks to you Guiermo for the wonderful deal and best of luck in your new endoeavors in Portland!

Hey man send me that OM-10 cart:) Good find. I have a Project also, but it is a base model. The vinyl alone would keep me busy for a long time.
Take care,
BenPlease. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. Thanks to all! I appreciate it very much. Ben, I think I may have an extra cart laying around for you to listen to. Are you still leaning towards picking up a Sure M97? If so, I have one that I am not using and don't see myself needing it for awhile. Come to find out the OM-10 is just the OM-10 stylus, not the whole cart. Guiermo used the OM-10 stylus on some of the older, more worn, or scratched records so he wouldn't damage the OM-30 stylus. I also have an Ortofon Concord integrated cartridge that came with my 1200 when I picked it up. Just let me know.
Ted, when I get moved into the new place, your definitely going to have to come by and check it out. I'm still loving the 1Cs. They told me to tell you they said hi and want you to come by! LOL. Yeah I've been enjoying the heck out of them. I am really going to enjoy them once I get to the new house, and move out of the condo I'm staying at now with adjoining walls. I don't often get to turn things up due to the neighbors. That is certainly going to be nice.
Get those tables out and enjoy Analog Kid. I can't do without them anymore!
The cool thing is my preamp has two phono inputs, so when I get my 1200 back, I can hook both it and the ProJect up at the same time. So far I would have to say that the ProJect has deeper bass and more defined highs, but the 1200 has a richer and more defined midrange. I think that is probably due to the difference between the OM-30 cart on the ProJect and the Denon DL-160 cart on the Technics. It's going to be interesting to do a side by side on the two when the 1200 gets back and also try swapping the cartridges between the tables just to see what if. That should be fun (at least after alignment anyways).
Thanks again to everyone. I sure do appreciate it. -
