What If Tsi3oo's Not Magnetically Shielded

hey everyone. i'm new to this as i've never joined a forum before. i just ordered 2 tsi300 floor standing speakers to use as my front left and right. i also ordered the cs10 as my center. my receiver is an onkyo tx-sr706 7.1 receiver. i originally am using 5 jbl speakers and my front l & r, surround l & r and center speaker. i have it completed with 2 energy speakers. the sound was too bright for me as the jbl center would not pick up enough volume when i'm watching blue rays. so i just ordered the polks for the front. here is my question. i just found out that the tsi300's are not magnetically sheilded. i have alot of equipment. all 3 gaming consoles, cd player and cable box. can u guys please tell me if i'm in trouble for ordering the polks. it's 3:334 am and i don't know if i have to cancel the order. i don't want to cause they sound like good speakers. if i can keep them, how far away do they have to be from my equipment and what, if any, of my set-up will i be risking. i have limited space so i was hoping to place the speakers a coupla feet from my equipment. help. rebug!

Personally, I'm not sure if those speakers are shielded or not...but at a 2 foot distance you should NOT have any problems...the drivers in there do not have unusually large magnets....and should not interfere with anything at that distance. I have a couple of KLH speakers with fairly large magnets about 1 foot away from a 27" tube Toshiba and there is no problem at all...those speakers are not shielded. I wouldn't worry and as Jeff said, most of your equipment would not be effected by non-shielded speakers.

thanks alot for that. i really want these speakers. i'm so trying to build my own system. what do you think about the way that i'm setting it up? can i get away with the front left and right speakers as towers and still leave my jbl satilittes as surrounds and surround back speakers? sure would like to know. rebug

+1 I answered the post you had going in that other guys thread, but cnh has pretty much cleared up the issue and confirmed what I thought. As for your new issues, I would try the JBL's and see how they do. Some people have a "Franke-setup" and it works, sometimes. The surrounds aren't always as critical a match as the front 3. I would match your center as you have already done, and if the JBL's don't work, look into some TSi 200's. They will be a great set of surround speakers in your rig.

The only 3 speakers that you must absolutely match for HT are the L/C/R so you're fine for now....later on you can go all Polk....but for now you won't notice much of a difference using other speakers as surrounds. You're doing the right thing..

Also, I run an Onkyo myself, the 805, and I like the way it sounds with the Mseries...not too bright. I use M70s and a CS2 as my fronts but also have M30s as surrounds but have used 'other' surrounds in the past...

you guys are awesome. let me aks you this. if the tsi300's and the cs10 are 90 and 91 decibal respectively, does it pose a problem if the jbl's are only 100 watt and 86 decibal. i know to use the equalizer from the receiver but i've never had floor standing speakers before so i don't know how to gauge if it measures it properly. it will be my first time seeing the words "full band" in my set-up menu. rebug

That won't matter...just run the Audessey auto set up with the included microphone and the Onkyo will automatically compensate for that difference...boosting power to the JBLs and adjusting the fronts appropriately so that the sound level pressure matches...that's what that feature is for....it can boost each channel several dbs or more, or reduce it if necessary. For example, I used to run some RS speakers as my surrounds which were 86db with the Polks at 90db or so...the AVR increased the sound level +3db to the RS speakers.

nother thought. does it matter that my receiver is stand out alone (so it can breathe) and that, consequently, i'll be placing the front right tower just shy of 2 feet away from it? will that cause interference? rebug

That's a GOOD idea...Onkyos are known to get notoriously 'hot'...but at 2 ft...your safe again...what you really need to watch more is the shielding on some wiring if you have too many wires next to each other that could cause some problems, perhaps....

so how do i check if that is the case and, also, i ordered 14 ga speaker wire by cables unlimited. can you tell me more specifically what you mean by watching the shielding of the wires. are you talking about speaker wire. should i change the wires on all of the speakers to match? help? ha ha. rebug

also, do i have to be concerned about the gaming consoles. i have the ps3 slim and the xbox360 elite. i think that it is the new one. i just got it so that i could have the hdmi cable. rebug

Only way to tell is to hook it up and see if you have any issues, I think you'll be just fine. Good luck.

I thought they were Mark, but I couldn't find any "documentation" that said they were. Checked the Polk site and Newegg, just found stuff saying that the CS20, and CS10 were. Mark (Doro) is the man rebug, if he says they are, they are, lol.

I'll double check but you're certainly correct, the manual just states the center channels. I'd be suprised since its just a bucking magnet. The RTiA series states the entire series as being magnetically shielded which makes sense since its the Reference Theater series....let me report back. Even the lowly R300 is magnetically shielded and it's also a floorstander....odd.

I would be curious to know the answer Mark, I checked the Polk site for the Monitor series and it specifically states that the 70's (for example) are magnetically shielded on the specs. page.

Edit: just checked the product page for the Monitor 50's and 60's out of curiosity, it says on the spec. page that they too, are magnetically shielded.

It will be interesting to see the results. With the large and growing market in HT I thought just about all mass market speakers out there now were shielded. But with the huge shift to LCD/Plasma maybe things are shifting back the other way. Very tough economy for everyone right now, so maybe this is the case.

The TSi and VM series are NOT magnetically shielded. The consensus was that few people use CRT style televisions anymore and they chose not to shield those particular series.

That was what I figured was the reasoning behind the lack of sheilding on the TSi series. I had heard that the shielding pretty much became a non issue with LCD and Plasma TV's anyway. Thanks for the info Mark!!

Bingo! we have a winner. unless you use a tube (CRT) tv.. it don't matter if they are shielded or not. few people have tube tv's these days. if you have a LCD or plasma or LED you are fine. it will not interfere with anything.

Not sure what your concern is. But if it's in regards to memory (flash/hard drives) no need to worry. Floppy disk and cassette tape, then you have a problem.
