I was hoping that knowledgeable people here could critique my first real home theater setup. So far I already purchased a Denon 2310 receiver and am planning on getting the following speakers:

Monitor 60s as mains
CS20 as the center channel
OWM3 for surround
DSW micro 1000 for sub

I can get that set for $1078 shipped. Any suggestion to improve this setup or possibly make it a little less expensive? Also, I want as compact speakers as possible. I listen to music probably more than I watch movies.. Thanks for the help!

The CS2 will match the M60's more appropriately. I have it as my center and it's wonderful. Be aware that it is pretty big though. Have you thought about the M70's instead of the 60's? They are great for the price they can be found at. Newegg will have them for $170/ea. from time to time.

I'm not sure I'd want speakers as large as the 70s. I'm in an apartment with only one main room. Are they significantly better?

You might just take a look at your local Craigslist to see what you can pick up used. There are some pretty good deals on speakers out there; at least in my area...You might be able to improve the speakers AND lower the price.

Welcome to CP SlyFoxMan, you have a really nice plan for your first set up. Nothing wrong with it at all. As said the CS2 would be the "perfect" match for the monitor series. But I think the Mon/TSi differences are small enough if you are having trouble finding the CS2 I won't worry too much. Have you listened to these and like the overall sound? Sure there are many different choices you could make, but if you like what you hear that is all that is important. You should be pretty happy with this for some time. Stick around here, and enjoy your system, then when/if you want to try something else, you will have an idea what you may want to try.

I have the 60's and 70's and I think that the 70's are significantly better. I'm not sure what the worry about the size difference between the 60's and 70's is for. There is a little bit of difference in size but not that much. The 70's are 4" taller, less than 1" wider, and 2" deeper than the 60's. Welcome to CP Sly.

Yes. I have the Monitor 70's, 60's and 50's and the Monitor 70's are significantly better in midrange and bass.
The Monitor 70's are nice for two channel listening.
They are bigger but they are not not overly large and are not too big for an apartment in my opinion.

The CS2 is a better match and probably costs less than the CS20.

Some good advice here, and I couldn't agree more on the suggestion for the CS2, as apphd said there may not be much of a diff. in sound/matching but the cost is significantly different. Newegg has the CS2 for $149.99. I would also spring for the 70's if you can swing it. Newegg has deals on them quite often as stated above, but Polk Direct is also a good place to look as well. Good luck and keep us posted.

    Great advice...above..

If you're doing more 'music' you really really can't beat the M70s for 360 a pair or so at newegg when they're on sale. That's a tough price point for anyone to match the M70s...sure there are better speakers available...but at that price? Show me the speaker.

That said, M60s with that sub should be fine the DSWmicropro line is a pretty 'musical' line of sub; very tight and fast.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I ended up going with the monitor 60s and the CS1 for cost/size restraints. I know they aren't as good as the 70s and CS2 but I'm coming from a $100 2.1 speaker set so I'm sure it will still blow me away.

Cool, glad you were able to come to a decision. One thing though, you may have to kick up the level of that CS1 in your AVR's menu to play well with those 60's. The CS2 would have been a better choice, but I know it can be hard trying to fit that beast into a HT, lol. Good luck, and let us know how it turns out.
