Hello,
There's an interesting article in the November issue of AudioXpress about a new vacuum tube. The old Mullard tube factory has been reborn under the name MicroTech (Phillips owns the Mullard brand) and they are building tubes. The first is called the E813CC and has the same electrical and mechanical characteristics as the 12AX7, except it is built with their own structure for triode assemblies. Based upon MicroTech's experience in building CRT assemblies the tube's internal structure is very different. The result is lower internal capacitance for both grid to cathode and grid to plate. Also the tube runs cooler and requires less filament current. The company feels they can make the tubes with better unit-to-unit reliability and performance. The company is planning to make new versions of the 12AU7, 12AT7, EL34, EL84, KT66 and KT88.
This is the first really new tube design in 40 years and is aimed at the tube enthusiast. Their site is www.techtubevalves.com
Cheers, Ken
