Sorry, I tried to be clever and failed to be clear. I am listening to the analog output of both players, the DAC built in to the Oppo and the DAC built in to the Cambridge (both boxes, that is), whatever they happen to be.

My other gear may be a factor: emo xpa-5, usp-1, LSi9s, and the CDPs.

The oppo gets quite warm when playing a blu ray disc and on a few occasions I've popped in a CD after the movie, it's sounded pretty fabulous. Maybe my imagination, or maybe the oppo benefits from warmup.

Oh! LoL... I did misunderstand. Perhaps I should have googled "DAC in the box". :) Thanks for posting your follow up.

As an aside, I would be really surprised if any SS CDP benefited from a "warm up" period.
Either way, the -83 is nice to have as a UDP. I just keep thinking I could do better. Probably going to cost me though. I may try to find a NAD to listen to.

I second getting a DAC. Most any CDP will benefit from a DAC. But starting with a half way decent CDP, then adding a DAC... can sometimes up the ante in sound quality.

I experienced that not to long ago.. never thought a 15 yr old (tube) DAC could improve the SQ in a CDP that is only about a year old. but it did.

and yeah, yeah.. tubes do rule ;):D

So, between the NAD C-545BEE and the CA 640C v2, what do you all recommend?

What kind of sound are you looking for? NAD is on the warm side, meanwhile CA is the opposite.

Well, running w/ the modded LSi Series, that sounds like the CA would be the better choice...

I'd rather see someone spend $600 on a CD player than $300 on a DAC. Just my 2 cents.

Onkyo DX 7555 runs the same DAC as the Cambridge CDP's. With more user controls. It has a nice SQ and sound stage. It should be a good match your Onkyo receiver.

There is more to the sound of a CDP than the DAC chip.
