Diabetes...

Well, i have just been diagnosed with stage 2 Diabetes... I had all the warning signs and ignored them. I am now on a restricted diet which bans ALL starches... bread, potatoes and rice, to keep my glucose level under control. Some facts of diabetes.... 45% of Americans over 50 have diabetes, if you are overweight as well, the percentage jumps to 85%. The atypical diabetic is:
1. overweight with a pot belly
2. elevated blood pressure
3. high triglycerides (>150)
4. low HDL (<40)
The sad thing is that most people do not know they are diabetics as they do not have scheduled blood tests. once you are diagnosed as a diabetic, there is no going back. you are going to have to monitor your blood 2-3x daily (and the test kits are not cheap...it averages to $1 a test)
what causes diabetes? The body converts starches and sugars to glucose. The pancreas produces insulin to lower the glucose levels. The insulin helps your body metabolism burn off the glucose. The problems is when you age, the body metabolism slows down and you do not burn off the glucose as well, as the body now becomes insulin resistant.
The fix? You have to cut back on foods that raise the glucose level... starches and sugars. You also have to raise your metabolism to help the insulin burn off the glucose. People with desk jobs will need more exercise than others. The exercise does not have to be strenuous... walking daily for 40 minutes will noticeably increase your metabolism.
So do not eat any breads, rice, pasta or cereals. Corn is a vegetable to stay away from (corn has a LOT of sugar in it, that's where we get fructose or corn syrups as sweeteners). Beef, pork, chicken and seafood has insignificant levels of glucose (like almost zero). Green vegetables are good...
So, if you are over 50, get your blood glucose levels checked out. Diabetes is nothing to sneeze at. It greatly increases your chances for heart attacks, blindness and gangrene.

I was diagnosed 6 yrs ago. Type 2 also. It could be alot worse so just watch the carbs and sugar and enjoy life...Take the pills if any are needed and keep active. Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.

Sorry to hear that Jon. If you went for a checkup every year, they might have noticed your sugar creeping up & could have suggested all these things sometime ago to hopefully stave it off.
Are you on meds with the hope of dropping enough weight & getting enough exercise it will come down or are you now taking shots?Marantz AV-7705 PrePro, Classé 5 channel 200wpc Amp, Oppo 103 BluRay, Rotel RCD-1072 CDP, Sony XBR-49X800E TV, Polk S60 Main Speakers, Polk ES30 Center Channel, Polk S15 Surround Speakers SVS SB12-NSD x2 -

The notion of diabetics having to check their sugars 2 or 3 times a day is a myth. I was diagnosed several years ago and very rarely check my sugars. I stay away from the sugar, watch the carbs, and get a fair amount of exercise and have not had a problem since.
It was bad when I was first diagnosed, spent a week in the hospital. It was so bad that my Ph level was off and they had to give me potassium shots (not fun). I was on insulin for about a month or two thereafter and was keeping a log checking my sugars several times daily. But after I get things under control it wasn't bad and I haven't had an insulin shot in years.
The triglycerides are a dead give away. Wanna know what mine were when I was admittted - 4900, that's right there's 2 zeroes on the end, as in ten time 490. My whole cholesterol count was so messed up they couldn'e even measure some stuff correctly.
I'm still on a couple meds for the cholesterol and probably will be for life or until some research shows that they actually slowly kill you over time. -

I was hesitant to click... Most "Karma" threads are people giving things away... I most certainly don't want diabetes...
On a serious note, my grandfather was diagnosed with this... It took a long period of adjustment to diet, exercise, and for him, medication. But after a few years, he was able to control it with diet and exercise alone.
It sucks you had to find out in later stages, but it's good that you found out, and you don't sound discouraged, really. I hope you can keep it under control with ease.

My dad has type 1. I used to be about 80 pounds overweight, but after my dad was diagnosed, I dropped all of the weight and have kept it off for 3 years. If I end up getting diabetes, it wont be because I didnt have a healthy, active lifestyle. Sorry to hear about the diagnosis.Music and Movie Rig

I'm a type 1 diabetic...was diagnosed when I was 25 and am very glad to have an insulin pump. For me, exercise is by far the most important thing. I am a landscape foreman and I am very active on a daily basis. Once winter comes and I slow down a little bit I have to watch my blood sugar a bit more closely. Good luck to you.

I'm sorry to hear of your news. At least it was caught and now you can work on it!

Its not a myth, it's a tool for Doctor's to use to ensure they have you on the right medicine/insulin dosages. Its also a tool for you to use to ensure you are keeping your sugars, etc under control. Once you have it under control, then yeah, no reason to test that often. The tests don't provide any medicinal purpose (other than a sadistic form of acupuncture).
I was recently diagnosed (6 months ago??) with Type 2 Pre Diabetes so I still have a chance to prevent it from developing full blown. It runs in the family. I'm on a pill, and I've smartened up on my eating habits; I lost 25-30 lbs so far and the Doc is happy with my A1C (or whatever the test is called) numbers. Once my own test #'s stayed steady, I stopped testing twice a day. Now I just test every so often, or if I'm not feeling right.____________________

Type 2 diabetics don't need to test their sugars nearly as often as a type 1 diabetic does. I test my blood sugar about 6-7 times a day to ensure that I'm where I should be and my Hemoglobin A1C is right around 6%. I know people who are type 2 that test daily and others test every few days or less. It all depends on how well you are controlling your diet and how comfortable you are about what your blood sugar levels are.

Sorry to hear you are a type 2.
Checking your Blood Sugar is very important because this information will tell you how well your blood sugar is in control with the meds you are taking. Don't listen to the suggestion that blood sugar measuremnt is a myth. Poor blood sugar control can lead to many bad things which I will not list here. Just google diabetic complications. The only way you know you have good control is by measuring your blood sugar. Just do it in the morning every day.
I am a type 1 for 52 years. The keys to good diabetec management is to have low body fat, exercise, not smoke and eat slow carbohydrates like friuts. Fast carbohydrates like coke and candy get into your blood very fast and spike your blood sugar.
One more thing, insulin reacts with the glucose in your blood to make it smaller so that it can pass through your cell membranes. If you have no insulin the glucose stays in your blood and your cells and body starve. Also your body hates high glucose levels in blood. Your kidneys will try and filter out the glucose. The kidneys also remove much water in this process.
The result is that you piss alot, drink water alot and get skinny and eventually will die without insulin in less than a year. Diabetic pills reactivate the cells that produce insulin and can some times work well for many years.
Are you on pills or insulin?
Good luck.
Email me if you want any more cheap advice. -
My doctor wants me to watch my levels on a restricted diet... the initial blood test glucose score showed 150 (glucose sores... <100=normal, 100-125=pre-diabetic, >125=diabetic)... so far, with the elimination of starches, my scores average about 110... I have lost about 10 lbs in the past three weeks... If this keeps up, I probably won't need meds but will have to watch my diet. He expects me to lose at least 30 lbs and wants to see my glucose scores then...
I just wanted to inform people that diabetes is out there and it's usually too late when they discover it... -
Glad to hear things are going well for you. I know it can be tough to modify the diet sometimes, but you will probably feel much better, especially with increased exercise. Best of luck to you.
