Why are you still using P2's anyway?

All of the newer machines are tied up doing other things. For example, the HTPC's are hooked up to a TV/projector for recording, etc. and the better desktops are used for more software-intensive tasks like video editing. Mom and Dad both have newer desktops and then I'm left with the P2's.

I guess that didn't really answer my question of why you are using P2's? You can get P3s on craigslist for $40, P4's for $100 or less. Brand new Core2Duo's for under $400 at stores when on sale. Still using a P2 for anything sounds insane to me. No matter what you do to tweak a p2 it's not going to be even close to the slowest p4.

Get yourself a used Dell off ebay and tweak that. For $700 I have a machine that's going to last a LONG time.

I'm planning to upgrade three of the desktops to the following:

    http://www.dell.com/us/en/business/desktops/desktop-optiplex-360/pd.aspx?refid=desktop-optiplex-360&s=bsd&cs=04

Then relocate the Core Duo to another room, and keep the Pentium 4's for storage. I'll still have the HP Digital Entertainment Center (Pentium D) hooked up to the PJ and one more machine hooked up to the Sony XBR.

Those optiplex aren't bad, try to get the 760 though, it's a little more but worth it.

I have a Precision 490 myself that's fully loaded. It's served me well so far.

Right now I'm using Safari on my Powerbook and Firefox on my Panasonic Toughbook running XP. Safari seems to render pretty quickly even on my ancient 1.25Ghz G4 Powerbook and is compatible with almost everything I come across on the web. Firefox runs well enough on the Toughbook, although it is a bit of a resource hog. I've also noticed that Firefox occasionally has trouble with some Java implementations.

Firefox on Linux is lightning quick for me. Stop clogging your machines up with porno and viruses and you should be fine with any browser. It should come down to personal preference, not the speed of the browser on a good system.

Look, there's a pretty small number of them (5?), they're all free and easy to install... try 'em all out and pick the one you like. Obviously opinions vary so asking people "what they like" seems useless in this context, especially where trying them yourself is a nearly zero-effort thing to do.

Exactly what I said previously. :D Agreed 100%, it's personal preference and if you find one is "slower' than another, time for a PC upgrade/repair.

One of the reasons (and I hesitate to suggest) that I'm still using the Pentium II's is that they were very expensive back in the day.

I mean, with a whopping 64MB of RAM, 350MHz processor, and SoundBlaster 64 audio, these machines weren't cheap back then. So I want to get as much life as I can out of the hardware.

Also have a huge 22" CRT monitor for one of them - IIRC that monitor was well over $1200 back in the day.

and unfortunately those machines are worth $0 today, and that monitor you'd have to pay someone to take it.

Computers are notoriously known as the worst investment, that's why I buy them used now. If you buy a higher end used machine it's way better than some of the new stuff out there, you just need to know what you are buying. A 3 year old server/workstation will still have better specs than anything new.

Nope. IMO cars are the worst investment.

Back in the day $2200 would get you a nice Pentium II with 17" monitor, nowadays you can get a new PC for less than $400.

But buy a Lamborghini Gallardo - and watch it depreciate $80k in a few years...

    Build. Box. Cheap.

The fact that a P2 cost $2k is the lamest excuse I believe I have ever heard for using one now (almost 10 years later).
I recently built a HTPC for just a little over $300 that has HDMI out and 1.5tb storage.

    Get with the program.;)

Aaaand welcome to having no idea what you're talking about. Collector and performance cars routinely go up - considerably - in value. Your daily driver Nissan or Toyota is a horrible investment but if you're going to talk about Lambos you're just flat out wrong.

It's not like I don't have recent hardware. I just HATE throwing away older hardware that still works and cost a lot back in the day.

Whoops. I was looking at eBay motors and saw the price of Lambos go down tremendously over the past few years. Same thing with another high-end, expensive car:

    See the following link:

    http://motors.shop.ebay.com/Cars-Trucks-/6001/i.html?_dmpt=US_Cars_Trucks&_mak=BMW&_mod=M6&_sop=&_rdc=1

I thought these cars were $102k when they first came out, no?

    I understand, it's a personal thing.

Those things hog power and are inefficient as hell for anything you may be doing except maybe a terminal. And they are still just chewing up power for nothing.

    Let them go.

I get it. If you keep a Lambo for a LONG time, it will appreciate in value.

That doesn't change the fact that a 4 year old Lambo depreciated 80k.

Just check eBay Motors!! Lambos from 2006 are going for approx. 100-120k.

That's... waht investment is. Keeping something a long time. Lots of things depreciate immediately but eventually become valuable again. I don't think any moron on the planet buys a car and expects to sell it four years later for a profit, unless it was already a collectible when they bought it.

There are DOZENS if not hundreds of collector cars that you could have bought in 2006 and would be worth double what you paid for them today. Not any new cars, probably, but who said they had to be new?
