If you add an amp to a 2channel stereo receiver such as a harmon kardon 3480, do you mostly still hear the qualities of the hk or the new amp?

What mostly makes a stock receiver like the hk 3480 without any amps added sound the way it does, the amp inside of it or the pre amp stage in side of it?

I think you will hear the qualities of both the pre and the amp, depending upon the amount of processing the pre is doing. Each component will impart their signature sound to the end product.

One thing I've learned in my short time in this hobby is that each component add's it's own sound, and while different brands have their distinct sound, it's the combination of all the components, wire, and source, that give your system it's distinct sound.

So IMVHO the short answer is Yes.

I like to put my HT pre in bypass mode if I am using it for 2 channel music. It sounds better to me that way.
