Subwoofer rumbles non-stop when on?

Hey guys. Audio noob here. Set up my system a little while ago and it was working fine. I have the Polk Audio RM6750 5.1 Home Theater Speaker System connected to an Onkyo TXSR706B receiver.
Initially, my set up was working just fine, but the subwoofer would be really touchy. If I adjusted it on the floor, it would start to hum, loudly, until I disconected the wires to the reciever and reset the power (at least this is how I think I got it to stop humming). Now it's doing it again, when ever I power it on, it just hums full blast whether a movie is playing or not.
I thought I remembered reading somewhere in the manuals that the receiver or the subwoofer had to be had to be unplugged before the connections were made. For the life of me, though, I can't figure out out to troubleshoot this.
For the record I have it connected to a single sub out cable with a splitter on the end where it connects to the subwoofer.
Any suggestions? Thanks so much, guys.

You could try just running that sub cable to the left rca input on your sub. That or you can try a different cable since I think the cable itself is shorting somewhere causing the sub to hum/play uncontrollably. I can test that out by disconnecting the sub cable on the preamp end and touching both the pin and outer collar with my finger or so and the sub will do just as you say yours is doing now.

sounds like a ground loop. Try to use a 3-prong to 2-prong adapter on the power cord of the sub and see if that resolves the issue. (if the sub already has a 2prong power cord - try it on the receiver.)

I agree with you that it could be a ground loop issue or dirty power.Sunfire TGP, Sunfire Cinema Grand, Sunfire 300~2 (2), Sunfire True Sub (2),Carver ALS Platinum, Carver AL III, TFM-55, C-19, C-9, TX-8, SDA-490t, SDA-390t -
I had problems when I tried using a splitter with my sub- I took the splitter out and problem solved.

I also split my sub and had similar interference

This site has an awesome search feature.
The problem could be coming form a few different places.
A cheater plug works, but there is a reason why they call them a cheater plug.
