Subwoofer rumbles non-stop when on?

Hey guys. Audio noob here. Set up my system a little while ago and it was working fine. I have the Polk Audio RM6750 5.1 Home Theater Speaker System connected to an Onkyo TXSR706B receiver.

Initially, my set up was working just fine, but the subwoofer would be really touchy. If I adjusted it on the floor, it would start to hum, loudly, until I disconected the wires to the reciever and reset the power (at least this is how I think I got it to stop humming). Now it's doing it again, when ever I power it on, it just hums full blast whether a movie is playing or not.

I thought I remembered reading somewhere in the manuals that the receiver or the subwoofer had to be had to be unplugged before the connections were made. For the life of me, though, I can't figure out out to troubleshoot this.

For the record I have it connected to a single sub out cable with a splitter on the end where it connects to the subwoofer.

Any suggestions? Thanks so much, guys.
