I agree with shack, HOWEVER, note that some "name-brand" products sold at Wal-Mart are in fact different from the same brand's products at other stores. Companies will sometimes sell WalMart "inferior" versions of their products in order to try and make some semblance of a profit with the ridiculously low prices WalMart has. Especially higher-end things like electronics.

Pretty interesting, if this is true. Any examples?
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

For many years there have been arrangements where the big box retailers can specify a price point and the mfg will deliver a branded product for that retailer based on what they are willing to pay. It has been going on for as long as I can remember. It was being done for Sears back in the early 70's when I worked there. Kmart & Montgomery Ward...the same thing. It doesn't mean they are necessarily an inferior product...just built to a price point. As with everything...you generally get what you pay for.

The one thing you have to remember is that the products are still branded and covered by the mfg's warranty. If Sony, Philips, etc. delivers a Wal-mart only DVD player or TV, they still cover it under warranty and it still has their name on it.

That said...if you want top of the line electronics...is Wal-mart really the place an informed buyer will shop for that type of gear? I think the consumers of electronics (and similar items) that shop at Wal-mart are getting value for their dollar.

Fair enough, I suppose inferior was a bit harsh. I shop at WalMart myself so I certainly am not trying to disparage them. Capitalism at its finest if you ask me.

Doesn't mean you shouldn't be an informed consumer, and know that a product may not be identical even if it seems to be the same between stores. If there's a huge price difference, there's often a reason.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Big guys like BB and Guitar center do indeed have "special"
low price point models made for them. I don't know that Walmart
does it, but they do make sure their suppliers give them a lower
price than anyone else. And they do check, too.
For me, it's a lot about bad experiences. And Walmarts seem to
be rigged to piss me off.
I used to fell the same about Fry's, but they seem to have improved.
They still put broken crap back on the shelves, but at least it has a tag
and a discount to let you know to avoid it.
