a bit of a rant

Ok need a little advice here. I recently put up for sale on the FM a Rotel amp, now I have had a little interest in it and have had several pm regrading it. I talked back and forth with someone from the forum and we agreed on a price and all the details and he stated that he would send payment out to me the next day, that was three days ago and have heard nothing from them. I have sent pm's regarding this just to let me know what is going on and still have heard nothing. Now I also have someone else interested in the amp and have told them that I think that it is already sold and am afriad that If I wait around for the first interested party and nothing happens that the second person might not be interested anymore. So my question is what is the right thing to do here, I do not want to piss anyone off but at the same time I would really like to get this sold...... So what to do?

End Rant

The first interested party made a deal with you. They haven't kept up their end of the deal, so IMO, you are free to sell it to the next interested party.

I would say you give a good 24 hours from the last communication and PM. If after 12 hours you haven't heard back then you are free to sell to someone else. That is plenty of time for them to get back to you and also covers any issues between the other party getting stuck at work, etc.

I lost something I was trying to buy and it was less than 24 hours from agreed deal. I had to go to bed by the time they got back to me and got stuck at work the next day. that's why I think 36 hours is about right.

First interested party.....24 hours no communications .....next
    Then 2nd iterested party......3rd.....etc.

Seems to me that would be the fairest way.

Have you checked their profile on here to see if they've logged on since then? If they haven't logged on since then, maybe something happened to their internet, or maybe something worse. If they have logged on and haven't responded, I would move to the next person. Maybe I'm being too nice here, but that's what I would do. Good luck.

Whoever this person is that wanted to buy the amp first struck a deal with you and stated a time of payment and for whatever reason has not completed his end of the agreement, that is not your fault. If he still wants the amp it his responsibility to communicate with you that something came up and to set a new time for payment if possible. Not yours to hold it for him until he can make contact with you.

One of my biggest pet peeves is being responsible if you say something keep your word, if something happens to prevent you from doing so tell the other party simple as that, unless there has been a tornado flood or some such there is little reason for not communicating even if your internet goes down there are internet cafes public librarys etc.

I agree with you completely. I was using the internet going down as a minor excuse, but if something more devastating happened, I could understand the lack of communication.

If it's been as long as you say, I would think that the buyer backed out on you.

3 days without communication is plenty of time. Whatever the reason, 3 days is long enough, hopefully everyone is ok, but 3 days? I'd sell it to the next in line.

    my 2 cents.

sell it to the next person in line.. if you then hear back from the first person who you talked to.. let them know you tried to reach them several times, over several days.. and they did not respond. so you sold it to someone else.

if they give you grief.. don't let it bother you. you did nothing wrong here.

The op said his arrangement would be that the buyer would send out a payment "the next day"....and now it has only been three days. He did not say they would continue to communicate or exchange emails. I have often put a check in the mail and taken off on a trip or to a place where I can't/don't visit CP but yet I have done what I said I would do. No access to CP...no PMs. Three days is hardly enough time to cancel the deal. It seems the OP is worried that he might lose buyer 2 when he really doesn't know if buyer 1 has "sent out" the payment or not. Based on the terminology he used I assume it was snail mail. I've had a mail take 3 to 7 days to reach a destination (and last Monday was a federal holiday - no mail service). My opinion is he needs to wait at least 7 business days before he kills the deal with the original buyer....and if he has not received payment or heard from the buyer then go to the next one.

A very simple courtesy PM such as "I sent the check today" can work wonders.

I deal with this all the time with the vinyl. The other day I got a check from someone who never PMed me his address or name. HTF do I know who sent this check? People do NOT know how to communicate.

While I agree with most, I think this is where I would start.
They said they sent payment 3 days ago, was this check by standard mail? What if they put it in the mail, thought all was good then went out of town? If they had plans like this it would have been appropriate to communicate those to you, but what if this was not planned? Hate playing the devil's advocate and asking these questions, but they are just thoughts that come to mind. This whole deal puts you in an awkward position of trying to do the right thing for the first person and protecting yourself from loosing a sale. If they haven't logged on, I would give it a couple more days for the check to show up. Just explain this to the 2nd person I think they would understand. If the 1st person has logged on but not responded to PMs I would take that as ducking you and prior agreement no longer exists.

Or what shack said..... I'm a slow typer

If it was a cheque sent then I agree that you must wait to see if it arrives. But as stated earlier a simple courtesy email that the cheque is in the mail should always happen. I had just assumed paypal was being used and if it indeed was and no funds have arrived it should go to next in line.

No doubt if it was a check sent via mail then 3 days isnt enough time, I had assumed it was a payment sent via paypal and that no one would be concerned about a check after only 3 days. I should know better then to assume anything though :p

I glanced at the FS thread and noticed that that there was no communication between seller and prospective buyer posted there, whatever occured must have happened via PM or emails which in some cases like vinyl sales where there can be hundreds of albums for sale it can be a PITA to request buyers to post there wants and can lead to some lengthy threads but in most cases it is best to post as much info as possible betwen buyer and seller in case something goes south there is no he said she said.

    Agreed

I've not bought anything from any of you guys, but I know that if I did or I was on the positive end of a karma or giving back to the karma, I'd not treat it any different than any other win; I'd contact the other party to let them know the mailing date of my payment (if by check) or my PayPal transaction, for those that use that... And I'd expect to know the shipping date and tracking number if available.
I'd send the shipping date and tracking number if I was the one shipping.

It's not rocket science to exchange money for goods... If communication falls short and attempted contact just doesn't happen, I think it's time to put the item back up for sale, if you are the seller.

That's my opinion and how I do business.
