Amp needed for LSi 15's

Hi,

I am using an Onkyo TX SR 607 (90W/Channel at 8ohms) receiver.

I recently bought a pair of LSi15's. I'm looking to get an amp, but don't have too much to spend right now. I'm looking at getting an Emotiva UPA-2
(125 watts RMS x 2 into 8 ohms, 185 watts RMS x 2 into 4 ohms.)

Can anyone tell me if this setup would be good enough for me to be able to enjoy the speakers?

Thanks very much. Appreciate your inputs.

I just searched online, and I think I have an answer to my own uneducated question:
But your inputs are appreciated all the same. Please let me know if I can find a good amp for a low price...yes I'm a cheapskate!

When you're matching a Power Amp to a PA Speaker, a good rule of thumb is to pick an amplifier that can deliver power equal to twice the speaker's continuous IEC power rating. This means that a speaker with a "nominal impedance" of 8 Ohms and a continuous IEC power rating of 350 watts will require an amplifier that can produce 700 watts into an 8 Ohm load. For a stereo pair of speakers, the amplifier should be rated at 700 watts per channel into 8 Ohms. A quality professional loudspeaker can handle transient peaks in excess of its rated power if the amplifier can deliver those peaks without distortion.
Using an amp with some extra "headroom" will help assure that only clean, undistorted power gets to your speakers. Some professional amplifiers are designed so they have additional headroom. These amps can cleanly reproduce transient peaks that exceed their rated power. In this case select a model with an output power rating equal to the continuous IEC power rating of the speaker. Consult the amplifier manufacturer or owner's manual to learn more.

Off the bat, 700wpc would be GROSS overkill in your situation. :) I'm ALL for it, but you don't need that.

The UPA-2 probably isn't a TERRIBLE choice, but for the money, i bet you could do better.

What's your budget? A solid 200wpc amp should be a great starting point for you.
I don't read the newsssspaperssss because dey aaaallllllllll...... have ugly print.

    pentaquod Welcome to CP.
Good idea to get 4 ohm stable power to the LSi's, unfortunately I do not think the Onk 607 has pre outs that will allow you to hook up an external amp. Is the AVR new enough you can return it?

Welcome to Club Polk. However, I hate to inform you that you would have to buy a new receiver first since yours does NOT have preouts for a seperate amp. If you had spent more money & gotten the 705 you would be in business.

You need a AVR with pre-outs, and an AMP with 200w @ 8ohms will
do the job. Maybe a Rotel 1080

Thank you all, for your inputs.

I exchanged the LSi 15's for a pair of RTi A7's.

It was by chance that I won the pair of LSi's. I'd not thought out the implications before I bid on them. Not a bit.

As it turned out, not only did I not know enough about the speakers, I did not even know enough about my own receiver. However, I'm glad because I've learned a bit now.

Quite frankly I do not think that LSi 15's are the right size for my apartment living room. And I've been enjoying the bookshelves (TSi 100) that I got for free with the receiver so much so that I could not imagine how the behemoths I had won would change it all. I do know that I want a set of towers, and I can put the TSi 100's to work as surrounds. But I guess I'm not ready for LSi's yet.

I was thinking in terms of getting the XPA 3, when I realized I'd have to get a new receiver first. I'm pretty sure, in fact I know, that the whole system would have become difficult to set up in my apartment. Not to mention the expense I was not prepared for. It would have been a case of buying the horse because I'd bought a horseshoe, and so on and so forth.

Good move, glad you were able to do this exchange, I think this was a better approach than running out for a new AVR and amp. The TSi are not the "perfect" match for the RTi's but will be ok as surrounds, you should be happy as you will have a good sounding system. No need to rush into everything too fast.

Enjoy what you have, stick around here and you can formulate a plan to get what ever you want out of your system. Many here have done it this way, and many still are building up what they desire.

You most likely will want a bigger amp than the UPA 2. Since that is going for $324 shipped I would suggest something like this:

The Carver TFM 24 is 225 into 8 ohms and 350 into 4 ohms.
