DTS Audio?

So my current setup I have my tv/dvd/vhs all in one tv hooked up to my receiver with the coaxial output on the back of it. Every time I select DTS audio i get nothing even though my receiver supports it. Does this just mean that the built in dvd player can not decode it and I need to get a external dvd player that supports dts?

I believe you need a player with a DTS decoder."The good thing about science is that it's true whether or not you believe in it." Neil deGrasse Tyson.

Well it is a crappy sylvania tv so I do not expect much out of it. I think I will have to grab a dvd playter like the sony up converter or something like that.HT setup

I'm sure Mike was just wishing you luck in getting your problem solved is all, he's Hawaiian so he doesn't understand us Americans and our humor, lol. Just kidding Mike, love ya. Your problem probably lies in your source (your TV in this case), if your player doesn't support DTS audio then it won't be sending the signal to your AVR and thus won't be an option for you to hear out of your AVR. Spring for a decent upconvert DVD player or Blu-Ray player and call it good. I actually have a Sony upconvert DVD player I may be willing to part with, if my wife is cool with it.

What dvdp do you have?I refuse to argue with idiots, because people can't tell the DIFFERENCE!

the program material you want to listen to has to be in DTS also.
and yes if your DVD player does not support DTS.. then you will not get DTS. but most DVD players for the past 10 years support DTS.. unless you have one that does notPolkFest 2012, who's going>?

Good point Al, forgot not only does the source need to support DTS, but also what you are watching needs to be formatted in DTS.

Will do, the only person that still uses the unit is my wife for some DVD's since she is tech. challenged and refuses to learn how to operate my PS3, lol. It is an "older" unit I bought at BB a few years ago before Blu Ray players were "economical", but it worked very well for me before I got my PS3. It is in very good shape, and I'll try to find some info for it for you online so you can see what one it is.

Haven't read the remaining posts because it seems like things were steered in the wrong direction.
You're receiver/player may decode DTS (which ALOT of models do anyway) but just because you can decode it, doesn't mean you'll always get it. It's based on the dvd/bluray disc you're watching. If you pay close attention to the rear of the dvd case, or during setup before starting a movie....you'll see the audio options available to you based on that movie. DD is more common than DTS when it comes to standard dvds, which imo sucks because I hear a difference between the 2 and prefer DTS any day of the week.

LOL dude yes I already said I understand that. I know that my eagle farewell tour does not have it but my hell freezes over tour does. I know what to look for and do I was just wondering why it would not play. So now that I know my dvd player will not do it than I know I have to get a new dvd player. But yes I understand what you are saying. ThanksHT setup
