Dead Raccoon

Hey All,

So this morning, I'm running late for work as usual, and as I leave my house I notice a giant raccoon just laying on my front steps. I can see it breathing, so it's not dead. I get a good distance away and try and shoo it away, toss a few pebbles in his direction. He eventually shakily gets up and slowly stumbles away. (I realize I should have called animal control at the time, but I was late and just wanted to get it out of the yard).

SO I come home this evening and there he is, dead on my front lawn. I call animal control, and they are closed until morning. I call the local police dispatch, they say to just bag it and toss it.... but considering the behavior earlier, this thing is potentially rabid, so that doesn't seem like a good idea.

SO... what does the expert advice of the internet suggest I do with this carcass laying on my lawn? Just wait till morning and call animal control?

Mostly I'm asking cuz I don't want any neighborhood dogs (including my own) to come in contact with the thing while i'ts lying there.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Or you can just combine the two steps...into one of two options.

A:Poke it with the shovel...if it doesn't move bag it up, toss it.

B:Poke it with the shovel...it moves...Then you quickly whack it with the shovel. Then you bag it up.

No ****....touch that stick to its eye first....then get it into a heavy duty large garbage bag ( Double up if they are the thin ones ) and tie it off with some heavy duty tie wraps.

Suprised the hell out of me who was asking, I thought for sure it would have been Ben ( But then he woulda just shot it straight away ;) )

I'm no expert on this, but I would say your concerns are warranted from what you observed in the morning.

As far as I know rabies needs to enter your blood stream, i.e. open wound, mouth, eyes, etc. I would take some rubber gloves, not sure the correct name, but what are typically used by some to wash dishes, and toss it in a garbage bag. Toss the gloves and then wash your hands good with an antibacterial or alcohol.

I don't think there is a huge risk but better to be safe than sorry.

Aside from geography, MA and NH should never even be mentioned in the same sentence. Completely different views on shooting things (in MA your "right" to own and use a firearm is basically up to the local police for your town to decide if you are even allowed to have a license; in NH no license is even needed for anything but CCW, and it's a shall issue).

However, I live in a relatively dense / populated neighborhood so discharging firearms is frowned upon, otherwise I just would have shot it this morning when I first saw it. Considered it anyway, to be honest.

    Thanks for the opinions everyone.

Just wrap it up good, place it in a nice Dept. store bag. Leave it in the back seat with the window down while you go into Walmart for a minute. It will be gone when you get back.

That was a major problem where I was in CT for cats and coons.

Double bag the critter and put it in a lidded trash can. Give DEP a call and let them know about it.
Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. Was it still dead this morning? If not, it's most likely a zombie outbreak waiting to happen. Don't worry I've been praying... erm... preparing for this day for years now.
Destroy the brain and be sure to keep an eye out for any other zombie-racoons.
Go ahead and take out anything that shuffles around just to be safe. If you live near a retirement community, please refrain from the previous statement; chances are those shuffling things are the elderly and should be respected, not treated like zombies... Yet.
