Ok, question. If a DVD or BD has 24bit audio, will the full 24bit signal be fed out of the coaxial digital output of the player, or is it down-converted to 16bits?
I run 2-channel stereo only. I currently have my Panasonic BD30 configured for "PCM" and "no down conversion" am I set up optimally for 2-channel? The panasonic audio is fed via coaxial digital to my Benchmark DAC/PRE which is 24bit capable.

Just guessing here, but I suspect it will only work over HDMI, because of the copy protection.Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable
Sony XA-5400ES SACD; Pass XP-22 pre; X600.5 amps
Magico S5 MKII Mcast Rose speakers; SPOD spikes
Shunyata Triton v3/Typhon QR on source, Denali 2000 (2) on amps
Shunyata Sigma XLR analog ICs, Sigma speaker cables
Shunyata Sigma HC (2), Sigma Analog, Sigma Digital, Z Anaconda (3) power cables
Mapleshade Samson V.3 four shelf solid maple rack, Micropoint brass footers
Three 20 amp circuits. -
I don't fully understand the question, but my guess is that unless that BD was native 2 channel 24bit audio, the answer would be no.
Beside the copyright thing, coax has bandwidth issues and I know for a fact is incapable of transmitting hi def and or lossless multi-ch.-Kevin

But does coax digital pass a 24bit signal when a DVD is done in 24bit audio?
I guess what I'm asking is, is the digital output on a DVD/BD player limited to 16bits?
For instance, I have a James Taylor DVD (Live at the Beacon Theater) that is 24bit/96kHz. If I'm using digital coax out on my player, will my DAC see 24/96kHz at it's input?Source: Bluesound Node 2i - Preamp/DAC: Benchmark DAC2 DX - Amp: Parasound Halo A21 - Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 60XTi - Shop Rig: Yamaha A-S501 Integrated - Shop Spkrs: Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2 -
I can't honestly answer that with authority but my guess is yes. Of course, you must have a DAC that is capable of 24/96. Some are not.
My earlier comment was concerning BD and hi res audio.-Kevin
