My dad just bought a Yamaha HTIB, He lives down in FL, I am in NY. He hooked up his blu ray player and cable box via HDMI. Both to the inputs on the the Yammy then out to the TV via HDMI. He got no sound. Best Buy tells him he still has to hook up the RCA or fiber optic For sound. This makes no sense. It should work all through the HDMI. He has Model YHT-391BL. The Yammy site is down for updating here so I cant look on line. They also told him it had pass through so he would not have to turn the whole setup on just to watch TV. I know this is not Polk but when I go down we might expriment with some new speakers that will not be untill April.

Best Buy is INCOMPETENT! I set up my bdp via hdmi only, no problem.
Some suggestions, have him try switching the hdmi's from the rcvr-tv, to the rcvr-bdp.
Also, he might need to use rca/ optic to the rcvr, and S-video to the tv. just for initial set up, so he can 'see' the set-up menu, but after that he should be able hear via hdmi, unless the cable's bad?I refuse to argue with idiots, because people can't tell the DIFFERENCE! -
Hey Obieone, Thanks for the suggestions. He ended up returning the Yamaha set up and Bought a Denon set up with Boston Acostic speakers. I never listened to Boston Acoustic does anyone have experience with these. It was sold as a HTIB, AVR590 and book shelf speakers. I like Denon better then Yamaha and he seems happier. It was purchased at BB. They almost talked him into a Bose for like $1800.00. I told him it was a waste of money. I suggested look for Denon,Harmon Kardon or Onkyo. It is hard when you can't be thier to help.TV- 52 inch LCD SONY BRAVIA XBR6
