7.1 speaker placement help
I could use some polk advice.
I'm setting up a 7.1 system in my living room that is around 20x12. So, I only have 12 feet to play with the side speakers.
My sofa is about 7 feet long which means I will have 2-3 feet from each side of the sofa to each left/right side speaker (Rci 60) and they have to be in the ceiling about 9 feet high. The rear speakers (rci 65) will be about 5-6 feet back in the wall and probably about 4 feet above ear level.
I've been trying to figure out if the side speakers will be much of a beneft so close to the listener and in the ceiling above. If it isn't much benefit I was thinking to make it a 5.1 system and use those extra speakers for my patio.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Go with the patio. There's hardly anything that even uses 7.1 yet & I used it for about 6 months with no particular gain in sound/enjoyment.TNRabbit

Yeah, good 5.1 seems to be the way to go. Set up right, it's completely engrossing sonically.-Kevin

I really like my 7.1 setup, but really the only place that it makes that much of a difference is with video games. When watching movies 5.1 is fine and if setup right better then a poorly setup 7.1. But if you play many video games then 7.1 makes a huge difference especially with shooters. You don't realize how much difference 7.1 makes until you try and pin point where someone is by sound alone, then those side speakers become very important. But for movies 7.1 has kind of been overkill so far.Denon 1909, want to upgrade for pre outs

yes ull need a rear centre for rear positioning in shooting games. 6.1 or 7.1 is great for gaming.Front: Martinlogan ESL

If your system has the capability for 7.1 give it a shot. You would only have to pay for speaker wire. If you don't like it use it for the patio.
I have very few 7.1 blu-ray's but the ones that are really sound pretty awesome. I don't have the best room to put them in but I really like the effect. Most of the blu-ray's matrix the side surrounds.
Good luck.
