Transporting SRS 2s

I just purchased a pair of SDA SRS 2's (my second pair) this week, and am scheduled to pick them up on Saturday. As far as transporting them, I had researched it back in May and had seen conflicting information about face up or face down. When I purchased and transported my first pair of SRS 2's, I had done so with them on their backs, facing up, with 6" of padding underneath them, between them and around them.

I had not removed any drivers to eliminate the sealed environment, but not because I made a conscious decision...I just didn't know if that was recommended. I've since heard that it is. Anyway, I drove them about 140 miles and they arrived at home fully functional and unscathed in every way, so I had pretty much planned on using the same vehicle and moving these new ones exactly the same way. You know...using the "stick with what works" theory.

Do you feel strongly about the face down theory or the driver removal, or have any other input?

On a side note, my brother is moving on Saturday, and I blew him off in favor of these getting these speakers. That shows some true character and dedication to the effort, doesn't it?

face up is the only way to go as face down can and will damage the domes of the tweeters. Driver removal is not needed as from my experience with three long distance moves of SDA's have been don this way without a problem.

Pretty sure I saw pics of where Lasereath (or however he spells it!) transported his. He had removed a couple drivers just to get a handhold. Seems like a damn good idea if you thing there is the slightest chance of dropping them.
    He also transported them drivers-up.

I agree with John on this. I did it two different times with my two sets of SDA's in back of my Pathfinder and didn't have one bit of trouble.

face up... removing a driver or two is optional.. but it's not a bad idea.. it relieves some pressure build up in the cabinet.

I believe the pressure in the cabinet is a good thing as it slows and stabilizes the driver's movement.

    This sounds better.
I think the only reason to remove a driver is for a handhold if you need one.

For transportation, I'd leave the drivers in too. My opinion.

I transported 2.3TLs for 350 miles. They were face up on top of a camping air mattress in back of a pickup. Worked great.

If you were to give it some serious thought, from a standpoint of wanting to avoid stresses that could cause the magnets to shift.......face DOWN is the least risky way to go. When I transported my SDAs & SRS2s I used strips of 3/4" foam arranged so that they supported the baffle between the various drivers (grilles removed). The worst scenario IMO would be having the cabinets either standing upright or laying on their sides, especially in a vehicle with a stiff suspension.:)

Are you going to use them for spare parts for your first pair?

They appear to be in pretty good condition and ready to go, so I fully intend to use them. I haven't figured out where I'm going to use them, though. I'm leaning more towards creating a second, audio-only rig upstairs, and keep the audio/home theatre downstairs. Of course that means I need another preamp. And both sets of SRS2s will need the XO upgrades now.

I delivered mine standing upright wrapped and rachet secured.....in the back of a open Jeep Wrangler.....arrived safe and sound...but it was summer time with no top on ;)
