By the way, what's the scoop on this, do people generally like it? I don't really know anything about a podcast, so not sure what that guy had to say.

Average product based on the reviews I've read. Here's one article:

So anyone running this? What are your thoughts? Im thinking about Dling and running. Ive been an AVG guys since it came out years ago. The All in One factor is appealing with me not to run 3 diff programs for spyware adware malware and anti virius.

    Hello

I've been running it on Windows 7, on a homebuilt tower since 7 was released. Seems to be doing just fine, don't really notice it. It does its updates, regular scans, all very seamlessly....

I've put it on a couple of xp towers and a laptop also, no problems there either. I guess you don't really know how good it is till it stops something bad....

Steve Gibson's a guy people either love or hate. He is something of a freakin' genius, however, having coded his main app, Spinrite, entirely in Assembly language. That alone qualifies him for a spot in wikipedia as a king uber-anal-obsessive nerd.

The one advantage I would hope MS can inject into a product like this is this scenario: when someone has a machine that is totally fubarred, trojaned or wormed up, running a good av app/cleanser often wrecks the system as system files have been replaced by compromised files by the malware. When the standard AV or malware cleaner finds and quarantines those, the O.S. is often hosed, requiring a complete reinstall.
I'd hope that Microsoft, supposedly knowing their own code and system files, their goal would to be able to cleanse malware and restore compromised system files in one move.

Heres an excerpt from an article on PCworld:

"When put against AV-Test's "WildList" collection of 3,194 recent, common viruses, bots, and worms, Microsoft Security Essentials detected and removed each and every one of the malware samples. How does this compare to other security products? AV-Test coordinator Andreas Marx notes that "several other [antivirus] scanners are still not able to detect and kill all of these critters yet." In addition, Microsoft Security Essentials put up a perfect score with zero false positives—it didn't flag a single clean file as being malicious. AV-Test also took an initial look at Microsoft Security Essentials' rootkit detection, testing it against a few rootkit samples, and found "nothing to complain about."

I might give it a shot here soon, as my computer currently doesn't have any AV protection.

My wife's sure as hell does though...she can't stay off Facebook!

I was running AVG free because it was all I could get to load on Win7 x64. After reading this post, I took out AVG, and installed the M>S> Essentials, which is so quiet and light that I pretty much forgot about it. FWIW it stopped and removed an ASF downloader that was scripted into a media file. I think it works pretty well, even though I still don't like the fact that it's not third party. It's free, so what the heck.
