Trade 2 Velodynes for a PSW505?

Ok, I have a question about a polk sub. Right now I have 2 velodynes, the VRP1200 and VRP1000. I order to match my system which is (Monitor 70's;CS2;OWM3's Powered by an Onkyo TX705) I have an opportunity to trade them both for a PSW505. How good is this sub? Will I miss not having the 2 velodynes? If I get the Polk, I can leave it out in the room instead of hiding the Velodynes in a corner behind the entertainment center. Thanks!

Is it a friend trading you? If so, just try out each setup and see.
Ultimately, it is your ears that have to decide

IDK the specs on your Velodynes, but they are pretty well regarded.....But the 505 will dig down to 28hz and has a 300wpc cont/ 480wpc peak amp behind so it will kick some serious butt...

Find some great bass scenes and have fun...just don't break the windows...hehe

Oh and to be fair, get those Velody's out of the corner.....:)

Actually it's an internet deal. In "Trade" I meant I can sell the 2 Velos and buy the 505. Sorry, should of made that clearer. I'm researching the 505 and hearing some good things about it. Thanks.

Not a good idea in my opinion. We all know what opinions are like though, so we will see what everyone has to say.

Velo's are a great sub, and like suggested it is going to be up to your ears to decide. Unfortunately you may not be able to hear the 505 without selling the Velo's and getting the 505 and then you are "stuck" with it, like it or not. I have heard a lot of good press on the 505, but haven't heard one myself. Going from two Velo's to one Polk, may be considered a "downgrade" by some, but I have a Polk sub and am very pleased with it's performance. Room size may be a determing factor as well, if you have two subs now, will one sub be enough for your room? Hope you get it figured out, good luck.

If the Velodyne's are anything like the older one I had (CHT-12) then I'd say keep it. And 2 of them? Really you should work on using both since I doubt the 505 will provide as much impact as 2 subs working together.

On the otherhand I cannot say whether or not a Velodyne of yours will/can outperform the 505 since I've never heard it. There are plenty of owners out there that love it, but it all comes down to how you like it. I don't know the class of the Velodyne's you own so maybe they're just not meant for HT. They have a wide variety to choose from and they work exceptionally well if you use them for said-application. You know what I'd do if I were you? I'd just build my own.....wait I just finished last night! :D

    Goodluck with the sub though.

I don't have a problem with velo's sound, I have a problem with placement. I thought if I had to bring the sub out into the open it might help if it matched? And, if it had enough power to make up for the other 2? Either way, I'd rather one of you sell me your SVS for about $300...lol.

Bringing a 'sub out into the open' would lessen the bass response being heard. Something people usually recommend if their subwoofer sounds too "boomy" or something, pull it away from a wall. Same goes for speakers.

Placement is one of the most important things when it comes to speakers/subwoofers. Its unfortunate to hear that you have limited placement, but do understand that it will hurt you in the end if you're not willing to rearrange a few things. Save some cash over a period of time and buy one new, the customer service at SVS is top notch coming from a few owners that I personally know. But if you're really on a budget, look for one used or build your own.

There are a lot of DIY designs out there:

    Infinity 12" Kappa DIY

    or

Shiva 12" DIY (check the build notes)

The Kappa is more expensive but is a higher output system, the Shiva is extremely capable, lower cost also and easier to build.

Hey 1fast, welcome to Club Polk. First off, in the future feel free to start your own thread if you have a question not relating to the topic you posted in. I am not overly familiar with the Marantz AVR's, but I would suggest you hook it up via subwoofer cable from the SW Pre Out on the back of the Marantz (purple color) just make sure you don't hook it up to the SW Pre Out in the 7.1 CH IN section just below the Pre-Out section. From there run the cable to the back of your 505 and hook it into the LFE In on the back. You should be good to go. A little fine tuning via Auddessy and making sure the sub is enabled in the Marantz menu and you should be in business. Good luck.
