Onkyo 806 problem

I'm looking for a little help here everyone. My Onkyo 806 is supposedly fried. I say supposedly because I took it to an electronics store to be fixed and that is what they told me...after they had it a month and a half! It would stay on for a short period of time before it went into protect mode, which was the original reason that I took it in. The guy told me that once it gets to about 80-100 degrees it shuts down. I have to trust this guy on this because I know nothing about electronics when it comes to the inner workings of things. He says that he's looking around for parts if they come available, but the parts brand new wouldn't be worth the investment is what he told me. If anyone can give me advice on what to do, I would be very appreciative. Thank you to anyone in advance.

Ok a few back ground questions first.
First what did you power with this AVR speaker wise?
Second how loud do you play it?
Third how much room did it have too keep it cool?
Ok now the test, with nothing hooked up does the AVR get hot and shut off?
Now new question what is the output section made up of? Transistors or IC? Post a picture if you can't tell of the electronics though the vents on top would help.

I bought this used and haven't even been able to enjoy it yet. It will play at low volume for a few minutes and then cut out and go into protect mode. I think I got screwed by the guy I bought it from because he "supposedly" had no problems with it, but all of a sudden I get it and have this issue. I thought it was fine because he played music over it when I picked it up, but it was low volume and for a short period of time. When I took it in, I turned it on and let it run without anything hooked up and it went into protect mode in a few minutes time...probably about 4-5 minutes by what I can remember. I don't know what the output section is made up of because the electronics place still has it. They said they're going to keep looking for something on ebay, or something like that. I don't know if that helps you at all so you can help me, but that's all the info I can provide.

Sounds like the guy who sold it to you screwed you. Do you know this person, or where he or she lives? You may contact him and demand your money back. If that doesn't work...hell, I don't know...how much is a hitman these days?2 Channel/HT:

Wow, I think you got took!
If It was me and I knew where he lived, he would give me my money back...quickly even if I had to choke him out!
Seriously, the guy has to be a real creep if he sells you an "almost new" AVR that doesn't last past 1 hour and hesitates to give you a refund.
Now that I think of it, I purchased mine originally from Circuit City and it turned out to be a dud. It was a floor demo. Same thing, it played for about 2 minutes then went into safe mode. I noticed a slightly foul smell, something like epoxy. I returned it, then purchased refurbished from Amazon ( which was simply a return).

See if you can get the original receipt from the guy, or at least call Onkyo--you never know they just might take care of you anyway.
You an also buy an extended warranty from Onkyo for like $70--not sure if that requires the original receipt or not but....____________________

To all that have responded...I think I got screwed too. I think I'm just too nice sometimes and trust much easier than I should. I'm going to contact the guy again and see what he has to say about it. I do know where he lives, so that is an advatage to this situation, but I think that he's a pretty smooth talker.

Try sending it to Onkyo. They can refurbish it for you for probably cheaper than the repair man because they can trace the problem to the root cause. Where as the local repair shop will fix items piece-by-piece and they might not ever fix the real issue.
Send it in, get it fixed, then sell it online to get some of your money back!~Dan

If it gets fixed properly then why would I want to sell it? If it doesn't get fixed properly then I become a scumbag like the guy who sold it to me..which I will NOT do because karma is a ****. I might give Onkyo and their horrible customer service a call and see what comes of it. I'm in the process of trying to get a hold if the guy I bought it from right now.

Ok, so I can't seem to get through to Onkyo CS...nothing new there. I emailed the guy that sold me the receiver and he replied back very quickly and claims he never knew of any problems with the receiver at all. Does anyone know of the chances of finding a circuit board for this somewhere? I keep seeing the brand new 806's on Newegg for $600 and am wondering if I shouldn't just buy it now? If not the 806, what receiver should I get? I have a 5.1 setup with M70's as fronts, M60's as rears(I know it's overkill) CS2 center and am currently looking for a good sub at a $500 price point or so. I'm about 90% HT, so I do want technology similar to that of the 806, but I don't care about much more than 5.1 so all the new speaker setups don't really interest me. I want a receiver with preouts so I can send more power to the 70's at some point down the road as well. I would prefer to spend as little as possible because I really am pi$$ed that I'm even thinking about having to buy a new receiver. Any ideas????

Is it possible to disable the amp section voltage rails, so AVR doesn't shut down? Then you are able to use an external amp, which could be even better then a fixed 806 AVR.

I have no clue whatsoever. I like the way that sounds, but I simply don't understand the inner workings enough to tell you if it's possible or not. If anyone else knows, I would greatly appreciate the help.

Could you bring it back to the one who stated it was fired, to ask him to disable the amp section so you could use it that way? It sucks as you paid for a working used AVR I know, it's just an option on your end.

The electronics place still has the 806 because they are waiting to see if they can find something. I can see what they guy there can do for me. I was a little upset at the electronics place at first because it took so long, but he seems like he's trying to find a fix that isn't going to break the bank. I'll probably try to head over there tomorrow and talk to him. Thanks for the suggestion.

Im sorry rodeo, but that jerk sold you a lemon.
Someone with integrity would really want to make good on the deal.
At the very least he should give you back you money and let HIM FIX IT and then try to resell it!
Perhaps you can take him to Small Claims Court?
Im not sure about Ohio, but in New York they rule against you if you dont show.

It's a shame you got a bum unit, and I know you have been working on this issue for awhile. I remember you PM'ing me a while back asking me for some advice. I REALLY hope you get this issue fixed, because IMHO the 806 is one of the best/most capable AVR's out there at it's price point. I have been nothing but pleased with mine, and have never had a single issue with it (knocks on wood) Hang in there and god luck.

Well I talked to electronics guy and he said that was not a possibility at all. I was disappointed to hear that to say the least. I believe I'm going to give him a few weeks to try and locate the board and see what happens. He said that Onkyo wouldn't even sell him the board. They told him that he will have to find one used somewhere, so I'm going to be keeping my eyes out for something on Ebay to pop up maybe. The one plus about me going to this electronics shop a number of times is the incredilbly good looking girl that is his secretary;)

Thanks Jeff I appreciate it. I'm not sure what exactly I'm going to do, but if I have to I'll probably buy a new 806 from Newegg, or I might be trying to get other input from people on here about some other receiver that is comparable and at a good price. I've got the money for it, but I'm cheap and don't wanna spend it.

This isn't an authorized Onkyo repair place. Onkyo told me that the closest repair place to me was in NY or CT or something like that in the NE. I found this on CL, and this guy seemed to be very nice and lived in a nice neighborhood and everything. I really don't want to have to go through the hassle of court, but small claims court would probably be the best option. All it would be is his word against mine and I don't think that you could prove anything one way or another. I am not buying an 807, I can guarantee that. I don't want to spend that much money. I want to find something with HDMI and preouts that is good for mostly HT use. I'm just playing the waiting game right now. I'm going to continue to be nice to this guy and eventually remind him of the fact that I remember where he lives...but in a nice way;)
