Can anyone help me with info on the Carver 'Cube' amp? By help, im referring to any problems these were prone to, longevity, sound quality, or anything that you might think I would need to know to make a decision on purchasing one of these little units.

Ive read alot of reviews on this amp and from what ive read they seem to be a good amp.

I plan on using it in a 2-channel setup, driving either a pair of 10b's or Mirage OMD-15's.

thanx in advance

tom

I had one many years ago and it sounded great, but these are over 20 years old so plan on sending it in it in for an overhaul and you will not be disappointed.

Mr Carver opened a repair shop and will do an overhaul for a rate of $175 plus shipping

For the kind of info your looking for I suggest going here. And yes Bob and Rita have set up shop but the rate has changed to $200.00 now.

Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

Tom, The cubes are not especially prone to any problems any other AMP their age.

I do not like the spring type speaker connectors for one. I suspect it will need to be serviced if not already.

How much you looking to spend and are you married to a Carver cube AMP?

Well its a 'friend of a friend' deal and the guy is asking $175, which I thought would be a decent price. I really dont need an extra amp do be honest, but I figured if it were a good deal I would grab it. Eventually I am going to be getting another house that will support another listening room. If I am most likely going to need to put another $225 into it I will most likely pass for now. When the time comes I can start my search.

If it was working I might buy one of those for $30 or $40 as a novelty. I like Carver amps, but not that one. You can spend $175 a lot better ways than that.

They are ok, I have a couple of them. Not exactly the best. I don't know about $175, but hey, it's your dime...

:D It was more of a hint to Sir George of the Jersey Grands, that he could throw a bone to a fellow polker, which I'll bet he has done in the past

I personally own 3 Carver M-400's. Best little 200wpc. , that can be monoblocked to 500wpc. Only 1 basic issue with them that is NO DIFFERENT than other VINTAGE equipt. The capacitors eventually dry out wich can cause various issues. ALL M-400's have went 20 yrs. before needing rebuilt. Yes , Bob and Rita do have a repair shop. I use Rolland Barr of of Hi-Tech Audio. Office # ( 503) 618-7605.rolland@carveraudiorepair.com or carveraudiorepair@comcast.net. I had 1 rebuilt by rolland. Then I heard of the Bob & Rita deal. Talked to Rita and compared parts replaced vs Hi-Tech Audio. Much more parts replaced at Hi-Tech Audio. yES HIGH TECH COSTS MORE. fLAT FEE OF JUST UNDER 300.00 with SHIPPING. hI-tECH aUDIO warranty longer. 1 YEAR PARTS AND LABOR. Based on difference of components replaced and waranty , and TOTAL SATISFACTION from Hi-Tech Audio , thats where I sent my last 2 to be repaired. For me it was a NO BRAINER!!!! Here's the trick , watch e-bay for a cosmetically nice unit listed as " for parts or repair " . Then send to Hi-Tech. That is how I got my last unit. Looked good as hell but was dead in in water. I got it for 135.00. Sent to Hi-Tech. Now I have NEW amp with only430.00 in it. NOW it's good for about another 20-25yrs. The 1st one I bought I run the dog poo out of it and was still running good. ( aprox 23yrs. old ). Only issue was it was a little sluggish compared to the one I got rebuilt at Hi-Tech. It still worked good with NO ISSUES but in comparison to 1 freshly rebuilt it was slow. If you have a problem durring your warranty period ( wich I haven't and 1 is just about off warranty ) Rolland WILL take care of you. Don't take MY word for it , read the reviews googling Carver Audio Repair or Hi-Tech Audio. The M-400 is a TANK!!! Do not fear it. Great tonal qualities to boot. Hope you found this all helpful. Sorry about the typing. Need more coffee!!! LOL

+1 for Rolland. Repaired a TFM-55X and rebuilt my TFM-45 for me.
