I have a 7.1 surround system I use pretty much for HT-tv/sports, movies/dvd/bluray and was wondering if I have my Polk surround system set up properly with the right specific speakers for their job. Is the FXi A6 better for side or rears and same goes with the RTi A3's? With the FXi A6 they have a feature that lets you switch them from bi-pole or di-pole and where should it be set for best sound for my specific application?

My setup below:

Polk RTi A9 front floor tower speakers L/R
Polk CSi A6 center speaker
Polk FXi A6 side speakers
Polk RTi A3 rear speakers
SVS PB-12 Ultra sub

Play around with placement and too see what sounds best. I'm running my FXI a6's on the rear wall only because my seating is right up against the rear wall.

I would run your FxiA6 in the Di-pole when they are on the side and
bi-pole in the rear placement. Very Nice system!

Your FXi A6 was designed to be run as the rear in a 5.1 set up or as the side surrounds in a 7.1 set up. This is per the THX specification. See http://www.thx.com/home/setup/speakers/71.html And no, a speaker doesn't need to be THX certified to give THX, or near-THX performance. The THX certification just guarantees that it will. Of course, I've heard some THX certified gear that, I thought, sucked.

Also experiment with what height off the ground these sound best with your setup. I found bringing mine lower from the ceiling had a nice improvement in sound.

What option would be better in a 7.1 setup for HT for tv/sports, movies/dvd/bluray?

    Options:

    A) Polk RTi A9 fronts L/R
    Polk CSi A6 center
    Polk FXi A6 sides
    Polk FXi A6 rears
    or

    B) Polk RTi A9 fronts L/R
    Polk CSi A6 center
    Polk FXi A6 sides
    Polk RTi A3 rears

I don't have a 7.1 setup, but I would think the A3's would be better served for your sides. At least this is how I have mine setup and they sound spectacular.

If I were to add the additional 2 speakers, my thoughts were to put the FXi's in the rear. I could be wrong, but just my opinion.
