Verizon DSL download speed crawls at 295 KBPS

this is just happened recently (2 weeks or so), and it should have been DL 3 MBPS and UL of 784 KBPS (UL is currently at 384 KBPS).

Verizon is sending their Tech tomorrow, and they confirmed that there is no outage or repair work at the local CO.

Anyone has any idea what could possibly go wrong? I ruled out virus/worms since it affects 1PC/3LT consistently across the board. Can a DSL modem "malfunctioning" to slow down DL speed to that level? Verizon Tech Support confirmed the speed issue from their end, btw.

Thanks.

295KBPS meaning about 40kb/s total download speed?

If you have Verizon's 3meg plan, then you should be getting an average of 200-300kB/s on downloads, and around 50-75kB/s on uploads.

    Like this:

Polkatese, something is fishy. You should get faster dl than ul speed from your provider.

I do not know what is causing your connection speed to be so. But I could tell you this. 3mb down and 768 up is your connection speed. Your actual throughput would be

3000/8: giving you around 375kb download
768/8: giving you around 96kb upload

Why? I may have this backwards but 8 bits = 1 byte

Anyhow, hope verizon gets the problem the resolved for you. In a timely manner.

That's weird...your download speed is right at where it should be, but your upload is way high.

    I say keep it!

Thanks guys. I rather have doubled DL speed and halved UL speed...

well, then DL speed appears to be normal/average but UL is abnormal. Should I cancel the repair visit? I hate to waste their time if it looks normal...

Well, I did the same test a few weeks ago, using wireless (which lowers performance).

    Here's what we pay for:

    - AT&T HSI Express ($25/mo.)
    - Downstream Speed: Up to 1.5 Mbps
    - Upstream Speed: Up to 384 Kbps

Here's what I got from speedtest (remember, I could expect better results from a wired connection):
    Alea jacta est!

Kex, that's what I somewhat expecting to be my Verizon performance if not better since I (think) the plan is 3MBPS DL/ 768 KBPS upload.

Jimmy, that's is just sickening! :)

I'll wait for the techie tomorrow and see what he said....

Don't cancel your app. What I see on the second test is .38mb that's about 380Kb or 1/10th of what your supposed to be getting. It should be reading somewhere around 2.0-3.0mb.

I install dsl eq for Qwest, and it could be a myriad of issues, from your modem to a cable problem, or who knows.

Actually, looking at it again your download is 250k and your upload is 380k. You're definitely not running right.

I really wish Verizon and the others would get with the program and offer you guys something worthwhile. My internet ISP service is like 25 bucks a month, I rent the fiber equipment from Japan's NTT Comm center since they don't sell it. Right I'm pushing 100 meg, next month I'm upgrading to 1gb Fiber line.

    Slight difference in infrastructure there....

Verizon tech came by this morning, measured the bandwidth throughput and infrastructure is capable of 1.5 MB service (gotcha #1), so, even though I have a "3 MBPS/768 KBPS" plan, I won't get there. Sad part is: 1.5 MBPS and 3MBPS plan has the same monthly cost, so bitchin' to CS won't do any good.

As it turned out, DSL Modem is the culprit, so a replacement (Westell 6100G) is in place ($59). Below is the new speedtest result.

I am easy to please, I guess.

You could always go the FIOS route if it's available in your area.

The local city rejected FIOS or can't come to an agreement with Verizon (this is according to the Verizon tech who came this morning) I am shocked, having been waiting for FIOS for two years. Having said that, it might be a bless in disguise, since I am sure FIOS monthly is north of $75/month. Don't need the extra cost, that's fo sho.
