You have to be careful about what you see on the internet. Looks like PETA propaganda for the most part.

I'm not saying some of what was shown is not wrong by our standards. But pictures without the background story can portray anything from the truth to totally 180% from the truth. That collection of video were created to create the emotional response it got from you.

Again I'm not saying it's right or that it is not in humane, but some of the stills could just as easily have been of a dog that just ripped the face off from some child, and was beaten. We just don't know, that is the only point I am trying to make.

As soon as I saw the word PETA it all became very suspect to me because of their MO.

Every picture tells a story, and a collection of pictures can tell any story you want it to.

I will agree with on one thing though, the world is getting pretty *&%$& up.

There was an expose` on this subject a few years ago. It was aired on Dateline, 60 Minutes or 20/20. It is happening regardless of your opinion of PETA, or their motives. It's done in Russia also.

It's what's for dinner. A lot of people don't have a choice of what to eat, or they choose dog, or cat. Really it does disturb me when I see dogs treated that way. Very disturbing.
    BTW buy American.

Man the chinese are ****. I've been there a couple times and in many rural and some not so rural areas they believe the meat of animals tastes better when adrenaline is prevalent in the meat. Thus, they torture the animals in unspeakable ways that result in slow deaths.

P.S. I hate PETA, but animal abuse in China is no BS.

Not disagreeing that this is not going on. Not disagreeing that this is disturbing, and not to our standard definition of what we call civilized. But it is not a "Chinese" problem. As gdb said it also goes on in Russia, and Korea, and Africa, and on and on. At least for many of those areas it is mostly tied to economic conditions, and culture.

Not like the dog and **** fighting that takes place even here in the good ol USA.

Not that this makes it right, just saying.

Looking at it again I can see how the "just saying " could be interpetted in different ways when read. What I was "just saying" is those who live in glass houses should not throw stones.

I think it is all quite relative to cultural values and practices.
We value our dogs and cats as pets. They value them as food. The animals we value as food are treated quite cruelly here in the US. Not only that, dogfighting and cockfighting is totally culturally accepted in some areas of the US even though it is illegal and cruel IMO.

It's a cultural issue and while I agree with opinion that it is cruel and I would not participate in it, I can't really judge others for doing so. They don't see anything wrong with it. (in other countries, here it is illegal and that is that.)

I pose this question: How is this more important or shocking than the things that women around the world endure as a result of cultural beliefs? Where is the outrage about that?

That is a debate for another forum. I would not wish to ignite that flame war here.

I was posing a question based on comparative cultural differences and noting that one is an animal and the other is treated as such.

I'm just bringing up a couple more points to add to the thread. Not to say anyone is wrong or right.

    1. Dogs are animals, cows are animals.
    2. Eating dogs are actually raised and not the same kind as pet ones. Pet ones probably don't even taste all that good.
    3. We have Mike Vick in the US, how can we blame China?

I had a knuckle sandwich once. It tasted a lot like revenge. I tend to stay away from that kind of sandwich unless I've been drinking bourbon... Then it's all fun and games.

I am from Asia and yes, most of the soldiers and poor people eat dogs as delicacy ( gross! ) but I have never heard about eating cats which I think they ( cats) are kind of poisionous.

I don't think dog a **** fighting are accepted in any "area." Living in an area where dog and **** fighting are not uncommon, it is not considered acceptable by the people in this "area." It is just considered acceptable by the lowlifes that participate. I would prefer not to post what I consider the appropriate punishment for dog and **** fighting. And just to be clear, I wouldn't even bother to piss on the local PETA office if it was on fire.

Can you imagine what a Hindu would think if they saw one of our stock yards:eek:

I remember back in the 70's there was a spike in beef prices (I don't remember why) but several grocery stores started offering horse meat as an alternative. My father bought some, was not bad, but sure wasn't beef, prices subsided and we returned to beef.

Although I'm sure that standard household cat does get consumed, I think the "cat" commonly referred to as being eaten is actually raised as livestock the same as pork chicken and beef. The same with dog, which I have tried but didn't care for, it was not my hosts pet but purchased at the market just like we would shop for hamburger. The Chinese actually had a special breed of dog raised as livestock, the Mongolian Chinese Meat Dog, just as Westerners raise some rabbits for meat and other types of rabbit as pets.

In past history different European countries and the US have eaten dog, cat, horse (still slaughtered for cat food), and even rat.
So the controversy should not be what is eaten, as much as how it is treated before consumption.

Not to mention bear paws, pig blood cubes, and any number yucky food I'd never dare to try.

I'll admit that, as a kid, I have tasted dog meat. Of course, I tasted it without knowing beforehand (it tasted like beef, in case anyone wants to know). I would never knowingly eat anything that's considered a pet. My dog at home is a member of the family and I detest anyone who would consider eating dogs (or cats).

Btw, I have seen dogs sold as food at street markets in China. They are alive (and are usually puppies - people don't like tough meat) and not processed like us buying meat at our local supermarket.
