Well, depending how things in the near-future come out I might be moving into something much larger than where I'm at now. I do like what I currently run, and understand the weak links in my system but I'm wondering if I should bother to look for some SDA 3.1's or skip that and attempt to look for a pair of 2.3's?

Trying to gather from your experience how the 3.1's compare to the 1C's (that I currently own). It's not that there's anything wrong with them at all in anyway, I'd just like to 'step it up' if you may. I know it's a hefty jump from 1C's to 2.3's (I've heard 2.3's modded in the same room as the 1C's I have) so you can spare me the details, I just really love the look that the SRS models bring along with the awesome sound :D

    Lol

Well financially another pair won't even hurt us at all, and I was planning on trading the 1C's+cash or just picking up a pair and then selling what I have. No room for 2 pairs of big speakers.

That and it's nice to have some money still left over from deployments. Fortunately for me we have no kids, and money's set aside for a house in the next 3-4yrs once we leave Chicago. So for the time being, my 'audio setup' is my child and it needs plenty of nurturing :D

If I were you I would keep the SDA-1C's and put the extra money into upgrading gear.

You could also upgrade the capacitors in the 1C's as well. Just my $0.02.
    Enjoy!

See I considered that, going RD0's and a full makeover on the X-O....even upgrade the binding posts. I just thought that I might then see a nice pair of SRS show up within distance and I'd want to jump on that, and do all those mods all over again? Lol

Ok let's stick to the 1C vs 3.1, if there's enough talk about keeping the 1C's then I'll check out parts-express and look into redoing the X-Overs. :D

As far as upgrading the gear, I've already got that planned out. Most likely will grab a VTL tube pre with HT bypass later on for 2 channel listening. An LED TV might be in the works much later depending how the wife feels during that time.....even though she's the one that mentioned we get one after seeing them at Best Buy. I don't watch much TV at all though so that idea might get tossed.

Called and no answer, so I emailed him. Let's see what he says, otherwise I'm looking into a crossover makeover. Sonicap/multicap's all around and mills resistors should do the job right? And I noticed one of the original caps in the SDA 1C x-over is 4.4uF but Darqueknight replaced it with a 4.3uF, maybe because he couldn't find a 4.4? Will have to ask myself but would this pose any significant change in terms of frequency over the stock cap?

Edit: One more thing.....regarding these 2 caps, which one should I go with?

Well, if it were me, I would upgrade your 1C's. I doubt if you would hear any appreciable difference in SQ between your 1C's and some 3.1's. I do agree that the SRS series looks nicer than the smaller SDA's.
If you are really thinking about going bigger, get the 2.3's. Preferably TL's. Or the SRS 2. I have thought about that path myself, and I love my 3.1TL's. Hell, theres even one size bigger if memory serves me right.

So I got an email back, only 2 hours away each way.

I won't be able to head out there anytime soon for an audition, but I can get away with going over there if I were to pick them up. They're in near perfect shape and are a walnut finish. I'd have to sell my 1C's though to make room for them, should I do it?

Should get some pictures tonight, I think I'll want to take my amp on over to his house and audition them. Compare them with what I already know about the 1C's and make the pick from there. And to think I just got mine almost 3 months ago and already looking to 'move up'......I blame all of you :D

Just a word of advice from someone that has been there and back a few times. Upgrade to the best that you can afford at the time. It will be easy to move the 1c's and get something higher on the food chain. Once you begin the move upwards the 1.2TL's will be your last stop. Trust me on this one. You won't be disappointed. For now go for the srs2 and above.

Skip the 3.1TL's, and just go for 2's and bigger.

I keep telling myself that, and am wondering if I'll really hear a difference between the two. Like I mentioned before, nothing wrong with my 1C's plus they're in excellent condition as well.

What would be a good/avg price for a pair of SRS 2's, and 2.3's (non TL)?

IMO, 1C's are about the best all around SDA. The big boys shine in larger rooms, but the 1C's are what I consider the "classic" SDA. I personally don;t think you'll gain anything moving to the 3.1's and just a little moving up to the 2.3's. Just, IMHO.

    Thanks!

After much talk to a few offline and on here, I'll just keep my 1C's then until a batch of 1.2's come up. Think it'll be awhile really until that happens, so I'll go ahead with the x-over mod. So far I've summed everything up I need -
    2x 4.4uF Sonicaps from soniccraft.com
4x 7.5 ohm Mills MRA12 resistors also from sonic.
    2x 2.7 ohm Mills MRA12 resistors

    2x 12uF Multicap caps from Partsconnexion.com
2x 20uF Multicap caps also from partsc.

    2x 40uF Dayton caps from Parts-express.com

Total comes out to either +$154 or $178 depending what Dayton caps I go with (as posted above). I can take care of all the soldering myself too

This is more fuel to the post above but would it be a problem to mix multicap and dayton caps or should I go with all dayton caps?

Checking out P.E. I can get the 'better' dayton caps for a better price than the multicaps. How would the two compare, or would I be ok if I wanted to save a couple of bucks to set aside for possibly some RD0's?

Keep in mind, the resistors are a for-sure thing. Mills Resistors from soniccraft

The cheaper Dayton's are just as good. Don't spend the extra on the others. The cheap ones are nearly spot on for values;) As far as resistors I am going to try the 10watt metal films at madisound. The mills are nice, but metal films are very nice IMHO. Clarity caps from madisound are better than Dayton's on the highs. Not my opinion, but Face's. I trust face when it comes to cap selection. Jantzen, or Solen's on the highs is a no. Dayton's are nice, but a few dollars more will get the Clarity PX series. The more expensive SA series is just thicker insulation for higher voltages. Same materials, and same specs otherwise. As far as mixing brands no problem. As far as 3.1's they are great dual purpose SDA's mixing HT and 2 channel. Again 1B's and C's are favorites. 2.3 non TL's is not really an upgrade from 1C's.
    Have fun.

Again thanks for the info! It is indeed valued my friend :D

I'll go with the Dayton caps then, and I did check out the Clarity PX series caps but they only had the correct values for the larger caps. You said that Face likes them for their highs, I'd need to look at 4.4's then right? The values are a bit too far off and only at 5% tolerance to even try. Not worried about it though, the caps in my 1C's are from '88. I bet they're just waiting to be yanked out :p

You can double up on the 2.2uf caps if you run clarity caps;) $3.10 each:) Parallel them. Also get the 12uf Calarity's for a good cheap cap. H9 ran these too.
Stick with the Dayton's for the 20, and 40uf caps.

I have not done Clarity VS Sonicap. There is a big price difference. I have run Sonicap's on the highs with all my mods minus very few that chose Dayton's for their value. I can not say either is better than the other. Again keep in mind that a 12uf cap Sonicap is $20.45, and a 12uf cap is $8.30 from Clarity.
