i need to know if mixing brands on a pair of sub cables is ok or not. got screwed from a guy on A-gon and instead of a pair of tara labs prism 500's i got one and a y-adapter, plus, the item was long ago discontinued. so would like to cut my losses and use the one good cable with another brand.

If you're only running one subwoofer (depending on what model it is) you might not even need the y-adapter+2nd cable.
Read the instruction manual on your sub thoroughly and you might see that just 1 cable (most likely in the RCA LEFT-input) will do the trick. This might however bypass your internal x-over and you'll be left to use your AVR's x-over settings. Try it out - FreddyTruck setup

I have run two different manufacture cables to and from my sub's x-over and it worked fine. I would not use the y cable. Just get another good cable to run to your amp.Sunfire TGP, Sunfire Cinema Grand, Sunfire 300~2 (2), Sunfire True Sub (2),Carver ALS Platinum, Carver AL III, TFM-55, C-19, C-9, TX-8, SDA-490t, SDA-390t
