Onkyo SR-605 issues

Hi polkies
I picked up an Onkyo SR-605 in great shape, but I seem to be having problems getting it to work.
So this is how I have it set up right now to test. Cox cable box hdmi > hdmi1 on receiver. Cable box is set to hdmi audio and is on an hd channel.
I also have the ps3 attached via optical to test (i will do hdmi later).
All speakers hooked up 5.1. I've also only hooked up one speaker to the left or right main channels for testing.
The unit turns on fine, there's the turn on click, and then immediately after that another soft click. About 7 seconds later there's a louder click like most receivers have when the amp relay kicks on (i think?).
On hdmi there is no sound, no video, and it shows 'no signal' on the receiver.
I have assigned both hdmi inputs and tried both, no video no sound. HDMI output/monitor out is turned on in the receiver setup. I've even done a receiver reset with vcr+power button.
Switched inputs to optical1 and the receiver shows a dolby digital input signal when playing a movie on the ps3. No sound output.
I searched for a speaker A or B switch but this one has none. I have no knowledge of testing this equipment further than the normal. I used a multimeter and the live channels on the speaker outputs show very little power coming out, something like 20millivolts i think.
The unit does stay powered on though, it shows no errors and does not shut itself off. It does get very warm over the right side of the receiver (not the power supply or mosfets in the front). It looks like the heatsinks attached to the mosfets under the video section are running very warm. There's a sticker that says it'll run warm on the top cover.
All fuses in the unit show continuity so they aren't blown. There are two 250v slowblow and two 125v clear glass ones.
Any suggestions? I've unplugged and replugged to no avail. It feels like I'm missing the a/b switch, but as I stated, this unit doesn't have one.
Forgot to mention - I can see the menu via HDMI when I hit setup. I know the hdmi port at least works on the output.

It sounds like a set up problem, lot of Onk owners here so some good help shouldn't be too far off. In the mean time I'll offer some thoughts I have.
Can you get into the set up mode for speaker level setup and hear the test tone?
What about a radio station, can you get audio from the tuner?
When you did the master reset did the AVR give you a "CLEAR" on the display?
Do you have the setup mic. still connected?
Are all the speakers turned on in the speaker config?
Since you did the reset, I can't imagine the default setting to have the "mute" on but maybe try that to make sure it's off.
I can't think of anything else of the top of my head, but hang in there like I said a lot of Onk owners here. -
I read the manual front to back, I don't know if I missed anyting.
I got into the setup mode and could NOT hear a test tone. It cycled through all the speakers and all the levels were set to default.
The master reset gave a clear and then it powered off, which I believe is normal.
The mic is not connected.
Speakers are turned on.
I've turned mute on and off already. I've even turned zone 2 on and connected speakers to it to check.
I'm at a loss.Main Surround -

Sorry I can't think of anything else, I hate to say it but it sounds like you just are not getting any output from the amp (20mv) for what ever reason. With what you have checked it sounds like a problem under the hood.

Bummer.....Don't suppose you can take it back? Did the seller say "it works perfect"
If so you might have a case....if not...time for an upgrade. -
Seller did not say it worked perfectly, he was just some old guy who's brother moved away and left the box sitting there. He plugged it in and it powered on but he had no speakers to test it with.
It looks like it should work, but it seems like the hdmi input and amp section are not functioning properly. This is a very odd thing to happen without any errors or automatic shutdown/protection codes.
I guess I'm just out the money, no big deal I suppose. You win some you lose some.
I'll call onkyo tomorrow and see what they can do.Main Surround -

Does it have a button to turn on Speakers A and B? Most receivers have that button on the front and maybe you don't have any selected. Just throwing it out there.Pioneer 50" Plasma (PDP 5080 HD)

Sounds like you're hosed, but you might want to search AVS forums for similar problems (there is an "official" 605 thread in there).
