Hello

I recently put Vista 64 on a tower I built and I got a coupon along with for a free Windows 7 upgrade, this also was a upgrade feature on the Laptop we recently bought.

I'm assuming this is just an upgrade disc you'll get or will you be able to do a fresh install with this? If not do you think just doing an upgrade from Vista will leave you with a good Windows 7 install or should you follow the old rule of thumb and always do a fresh install.....I'm hoping maybe the upgrades these days might go smoother then the old days....

With previous versions of Windows, you could do a clean install with an upgrade disk. During the install it would ask you to insert the install CD from the required previous version, read the disc, and then installation would continue.

Many OEM systems don't come with Windows disc's anymore, just a restore partition, so that may be a problem.

Could be. I've had to that with '98, W2K, and XP upgrade discs. I've haven't used an upgrade disc to do a clean install with Vista or 7 yet.

Pretty sure if you are running the RC, you will have to do a fresh install with 7.

I'd just get that crap off of there now.
Win7 is VERY nice already. Find someone that has an RTM or RC1 copy, do the install, then punch in the COA form your upgrade disc when it starts to turn itself off every couple of hours in March 2010 or so. I plan on purchasing it outright, just to have it. . yes I'm a big fan.
