Onkyo 606 with RTI set-up question

Hi guys i'm new to the forum and am pretty new to having my own HT but have been an avid HT magazine reader (only 21). I have had my set up for about 8 months so far (RTI a7's ,CSi a6, fxi a6's, and psw 505 w/ Onkyo sr606) and just really got into setting up my own personal HT. For blu-rays this set-up is wonderful but I feel like I am lacking in the music department. The sound is just a little weak off my iPod and i have to crank it up to the 60's+ on the reciever (max is 79). I know the speakers can handle a lot more wattage but just wanted to know if this can damage the speakers/reciever or if I should consider a stronger receiver for my set-up.

Yes you can damage the speakers. You should definately look at something with a little more power or get a receiver with preouts so you can run a external amp.

ya thats what i thought. After i bought this reciever i realized i couldn't pre-amp the speakers i really should have stepped up the model to the 806 but i was only planning on running a 2-channel set-up at first and was kicking a lot harder with only two speakers. What is a typical top range % to run your reciever at?

Every receiver/speaker setup will be different.Let your ears be your guide.

Do you think the way the iPod is hooked up could be a factor in the volume. Like i said through HDMI the blu ray response is almost too much at 50, but for some reason the iPod just lacks really bad until 60-61

Yes with my IPOD I have to turn my receiver up higher to get to the same level as my cd or Blu ray player.

I'm with Lee on this one, the way you have the Ipod hooked up is the culprit. I hook my Zune up to my 806 and I too have to increase the volume on my AVR when doing this. I know the Onkyo's have an Ipod dock that they sell seperately that is compatiable with most/all of their newer models. I'm not sure how it hooks into the AVR, and if it would make any diff. in SQ if you were to invest in one of those and hook it up that way. Welcome to Club Polk.
