I'm wondering if I can take the speaker output on the back of our PC and run it to an input on my receiver in order to play test tones?? Since the PC needs powered speakers, I'm assuming the rear mini-plug output is NOT speaker level output.. so is it line level?? Yes.. of course I can just try it and see.. but I'm at work and wondering and can't try until late tonight.

I downloaded a free signal generator for the PC. You can type in exactly the frequency you want and it plays it. I'd like to use it to run a detailed sweep on my system.

The PC has a mic input... but logic tells me I need a pretty good microphone in order to take accurate response readings.. correct?

The ONE thing I wish the Sound & Vision test DVD had that it doesn't - even a small set of tones and sweeps...

I tried this and got all kinds of annoying feedback and hum. It could be because my computer is a piece of crap, or my interconnect was too long. I do remember it working when I had my polk speakers, but now with my Dynaudio speakers I got the hum... So who knows what it is.

    you may have better results.

Absolutely, the quality will vary, depending on the quality of your sound card, but it will certainly pass the tones.

What format are tones in, btw? Can you burn them to cd?

Russ, you can download these files and burn to a CD. the first link is probably the best. The tones are in mp3 form and are 10 seconds long.

Those links rarely work. I searched and searched the net and found a couple of other sweeps and test tones, but there aren't nearly as many out there as I would have guessed....

I'll check tonight about the SG. I can't find the download site, and I don't remember what it is called. I know it works.. I played with it at home but had only our cheapy computer speakers.

On some soundcards there is a headphone out, and a line out. Make sure to use the line out because the headphone will have a small amp on it, for headphones ;) Duh. hahaha

You could also go the SPDIF route.

Thanks. I can't go the SPDIF route at this point because I haven't a clue what SPDIF is.

Yes, I remembered about the headphone amp.. which is why I asked about the rear miniplug jack. The PC has a headphone jack in conjunction with the CD/DVD player, and I think both pair of computer speakers we've used had a built-in headphone jack.

    Thanks again.
