I was just surfing the web when I stumbled across this review. http://www.stereophile.com/standsracks/782/
Maybe I'm reading it wrong but is he suggesting that what you put your equipment on actually matters? I mean I understand that it has to be a stable cool dry place, but how in the world could it matter what table (or in my case stacked on the floor) you put your equipment on? Admittedly I'm knew to audio industry, but I thought tables and racks where just for aesthetics and as long as they where inert and didn't cause any vibrations or any other form of acoustic disturbance aka a common (cheap) sturdy table or desk should preform the same as any other platform you might wish to place your equipment on.

Am I wrong in my belief or is that review full of it.

    You answered your own question.

BTW, the floor is the last place you want to have your gear on.

IF you need a table, try the "free" section of Craigslist.

For anything but a turntable, I can't see how the object supporting the equipment makes one iota of difference. Can anybody explain this in at least pseudo-scientific terms?

There's a thread about someone getting a new rack for their gear... There's a LOT of good information in there. I dont' remember what forum off the top of my head, but i know it was active as recently as yesterday.

Should answer all your questions. :)

What the equipment sits on can be as important as the equipment itself, especially if it contains a tube, a motor, and inductor or a capacitor. An amplifier can sound different when sitting on mdf board as opposed to glass, for example.

Tube amps are sometimes spiked to a vibrating floor. Not sure of the use model for that. Maybe something cancels through the vibrations?
