Stupid sub question?

I realize that what I'm about to ask is probably wrong and or stupid, but that's why I'm posting. I know you guys will point me in the right direction:D The time has come for my 160"watt" sony 10" ported boom maker to go. I just can't deal with it anymore, but there's a problem. Location will have to be in the corner and lower than 18". I saw some great deals on a psw505, which I'm sure would be light years ahead of my sony. I think it is slightly too large to fit.
Also my budget is <$300, so I don't have a lot to work with. That brings me to the next thought, which is buy a plate amp and sub separately and custom build it to fit(with a home sub and not a car sub). I'm good with woodworking, and have built countless sub boxes for cars in my time. I KNOW that isn't the same, but I think I can do it with the right advice of course. I value frequency response and musical bass over volume, but volume is good to. I also know that the corner placement is not optimal, but that's what I have to work with. I don't think I can build a sub as good as a psw505 for the price, but I'm willing to try and come as close as I can. The enclosure will be triangular to fit under a large corner shelf, so I should be able to get up to 2 cubic ft if need be.
The room is 12X17 FWIW. Like I said, I'm well aware that there are many flaws with what I'm trying to do, but that's the rules for me:( Is there any help for me? Please advise...let the flogging begin:D Thanks in advance guys!

Check these guys out for DIY. http://www.rythmikaudio.com/index.html

I'm actually building one myself, not from the guys I posted above but from a driver I picked up from a forum member here. If you do go that route which alot of people prefer, you'll find plenty of help here and at hometheatershack.com

Even at sub $300 you should be able to get a pretty good sub. I picked up my DSW PRO 600 for around 300 early this summer on ebay. Polk has got an ebay store where great deals can be had if you're patient.

Thanks guys! I've already been eying the plate amps at PE. I don't know about the subs they have there. Those Dayton aluminum coned high fidelity look good, and seem to have good reviews. If I build one, I'm gonna need more cash to come close to the new psw505, or something in that performance range I think. I know Polks subs aren't their strong point, but considering the size of my room and what it would be replacing, I'm sure I would love a 505 or good used 600 or something like that. The bad news is I just remembered my niece's birthday is coming up on Oct. 1, so I got get her a good present, especially considering I don't have kids, so I spoil my sisters:D The good news is I'll have more time to save money I guess:o Thanks again for all of your advice and help. Do you guys think I'm going in the right direction with my thoughts on this project. Do you think I should consider something else? Keep in mind my set up isn't the best, so I don't see a reason blow a lot of cash on some super sub at this point, but I could be wrong:)
