Marantz, Yamaha or Denon receiver

Folks,

I originally posted a thread whether to get Marantz or Onkyo but it sounds like majority prefer Marantz. However, I do see that Yamaha price and features wise are not bad either for example the 765 model. What do you folks think the sound quality, video processing and HD decoder between Yamaha and Marantz. By the way, I do not care about the amp as I will be using XPA-5 as a separate amp. So I don't really care at the wattage. I am just concern to get the best bang for the buck in terms of video and audio processing. Denon not really sure but I just kind of give it as a last option here. I was hoping to get an HD radio feature too but it seems like the newer models in Yammy does not have it anymore but the older one like the 863 has it though.

Thoughts, ideas, inputs are welcomed??

    Danz,
You seem to be a big Marantz fan. Which model do you have?

    FYI,
I recently changed out my system, prior I was running a Yammi 2600, now I'm using a RX-V665. But, before you go "WTF" The 665 is used as a prepro, for a 5.1 system
using a XPA-3 & UPA-2. HD radio to me, not a big deal as I use a SB3 for internet radio.

The 765 would make a nice front end. The reason the 665, $362.00 brand new (not B stock) from Inventory liquidator. Works for me, the XPA drives the LSi front end and the Yammie handles movie proccessing. I will admit to being a huge Yamaha fan, as I've owned 4 different models. What fits your budget & music/movie taste is what works for you.

    Bernal,
I don't think that Denon falls within my budget plus I am sure you can get similar or at least better quality when you run separate XPA-5 with a decent receiver.

You guys seem to have a good handle on these. I am looking to replace my current receiver. I have a lower end Yamaha (HTR-6130) that I got because it fit the budget and of course I got what I paid for. There are a couple of issues with this receiver that I don't think I can live with, but I'm not sure how far up I may have to go to get what I want. The first problem I encountered was that the receiver passes thru the video from the HDMI connections, but ignores the audio. This was a minor inconvenience since I could use the SPDIF connections for the audio. The next problem was that everything that comes into the receiver in digital format "stays digital" until it is output to the speakers -- that is, there is no line-level analog output available. I have some wireless speakers for my patio that need a line-level analog signal. I might have used the headphones output for that, but of course, plugging in headphones shuts off the speakers, so I only get music outdoors or indoors, but not both. All-in-all, not a very good solution for my situation.

    Advice?

    Thanks.

Am doing the same search myself for use in a secondary HT setup. I plan to use the receiver with front preouts to an old Phase Linear 400 amp. Ideally, I'd like to keep the cost under $300-350.

Many have suggested the H/K 254 refurbs available factory direct on eBay, but reading in the owners thread over at AVS, there seem to be widespread quality control issues at H/K, with the 254/354 having HDMI handshake issues, and just overall quirkiness.

Right now I'm leaning towards a facory refurbed Marantz SR5002 ($299) or SR7001 ($485), but am having a hard time choosing.

My HDMI devices are a PS3, HD-XA2, and Dish 211K.

    Refurbed Onk. (706 perhaps)

Denon/Marantz = Basically the same thing.

Yammy = Yamaha "natural sound" - not so natural to me. Kinda thin. YMMV

    VC,
If I am using the Yammy as a pre/pro, will the thin sound affects my sonic output? Or it should not be affected? Coz I am planning to do a seperate setup: amp & AVR.

I agree with VC, Yam = thin.

Have used Yam RXV 663 as pre pro for about 18 months. Recently picked up Emo USP-1 to use as a (very entry level) 2-channel pre and, whatever the strengths or weaknesses of the Emo may be, it blows the Yamaha away in 2 channel.

My impression is some people like Yam sound but more dislike, and no other mass market manufacturer is quite so divisive.

    I don't have any hands-on experience with using a Yamaha as a pre/pro.

I would imagine it will work fine. I highly recommend a reciever/pre/pro with Audyssey. Onkyo or Denon (Marantz too I believe).
