I have a file on my computer that got messed up in downloading. It says it's 0 bytes, and it won't let me delete it or rename it, because "cannot be read from the source file or disk."
How can I get rid of this?

I'm not sure anymore but I used to boot into dos and remove the offending files manually. I have not had to do that in a very long time and I'm not even sure you can do things like that with newer versions of Windows."I drank what?" Socrates

Ok, STUPID question. But I remember I had to ask this last time I wanted to boot into safe mode. HOW do I boot into safe mode? On the boot screen I didn't see any of the F-keys being bound to booting into safe mode.George Grand wrote: »

Every 0.25 seconds hit the F8 button while the computer is booting. that will give you the menu to choose safe mode
That error usually means that there is a bad sector on your hard disc and that's why it can't be removed.
I would do a defrag and a scandisk first, then try to remove it.
Thanks for the advice!George Grand wrote: »

Ok, problem. I defragged, still got the same error.
Then I booted into safe mode, and I still got the same error.

Put your right hand in the air while you click your heels together and hold down all the F keys. Then use your tongue to restart the computer, that should work.

Oh, and is the regular 'F' key between 'D' and 'G' included in 'hold down all the F keys'?
Thanks!!!!George Grand wrote: »

just a suggestion but check this url for tips...
curious to know what OS you are using.

I'm assuming you're on Xp or Vista.
Try running chkdsk /r from a command prompt. If the file is on your system partition (C drive), it'll ask you to reboot and check disk will run when it boots up. Hopefully, this will fix it by removing the offending file or unlocking it so you can delete it. If the file is not on your C partition, you'll get a warning that the partition is locked and in use and it'll ask if you want to unlock it for check disk to use. Type 'Y' or "yes' (I forget which) and let it do its thing.
Good luck and keep a close eye on your drive. It may be dieing and you may wish to start back stuff up. -
Use LongPathTool, Long Path Tool can simplify and probably end your problems in unlocking, managing and renaming files that appear to have a long filename.

I'm going out on a limb...but I think they have solved it in the past 10 years. But thanks for your input
