the best way to shampoo your carpet in your home

any advice....I am doing the whole house and was told to pretreat the soiled spots and as far as liq shampoo, dish detergent is also good to use. Any thoughts on this? On my way to Hdepot and rent the monster.

I would not use dish detergent. Foams too much. I also would not rent. I bought one from Wal-Mart when I first moved into a fully carpeted house two years ago, and it's paid for itself many times over.

Yup dish soap is super foamy! I have family member's that worked as cleaner's and trust me if you have a lot of carpet in your house purchasing a unit will go a long way! Especially if you plan on living there for a while

I think you can get a Bissel or similar for like ~$250 - $300 at just about any of the major retailer's....

A little off topic, but I used Dawn Dish Detergent in my Dishwasher and had the whole kitchen full of foam to where you couldnt see jack$hit in there. Smarta$$ Sherard, yes I know. AHAHA.

I've used laundry detergent plenty of times. We have some wool rugs too so I've used woolite. It works very well and does not foam like dish detergent. If it did you'd have a washer full of foam, which hopefully hasn't happened to anyone.

+1 for Bissell. I have one for almost 4 years and paid for itself already. A must Have if you have pets and carpets.

Bissel pro heat owner. We use the bissel soap. We first vac. the whole house with our Dyson (which sucks everything) then I use the Bissel. You'd be amazed at how much the Bissel will pick up even after using the Dyson. water is always like choc. milk. I pour hot water into the fresh water resev. the Bissel will heat it up even more if need be. We bought ours at Wallyworld and use it about 3-4x a year on our berber carpets and have not had any problems.

I Steam clean every other month and just rent the big Blue Monster from HD. They sell a "7 in one" carpet cleaner with the defoamer already in it that always worked great for me. Dont recall the brand but its in the rental section usually right above or next to the steam cleaners.

I've never really liked any of the home units I've had. I've always had pretty good success with the Rug Doctor rentals though as far as water based cleaning machines. If I were going to buy one it would probably be a Rug Doctor.
Lately though-I've been using, with pretty good success, the Oreck Orbiter and Dry Cleaning system. I belive they rent them too so you could give it a try without investing in the orbiter. But I am also using the orbiter for other purposes like the bathroom tile floors and such. I also have some scrubbers for the garage floor.

Or we have the pros come in, like ChemDry, which is what I am about to have done since I don't have time right now.

renting a Rug Doctor is fine.

I bought an Oreck which is alot of plastic but is somewhat useful.
If you shampoo on a regular schedule then it pays to own.

Quick Tip: to use a Rug Doctor machine on carpets that were previously shampooed, plain old Real Lemon bottled lemon juice is a cheap alternative to the expensive de-foaming agent that's made by Rug Doctor.;) Costco now sells Rug Doctor machines but they ain't cheap !:eek:

Best way is to get it done is by a pro. Home carpet cleaners are horrible. They leave a residue that actually attracts dirt (no matter how many times you go over it). After you clean your carpet and it is dried, take a wet, white t-shirt or towel and rub it all over the carpet. Now it's not white anymore and you can see that the average rug machine you rent does little to nothing. Also, if you hire someone make sure they use steam. Steam works awesome and will also kill the germs that are in carpet (hot water extraction or steam cleaning). Rented machines are like household sponges.......they just really move the dirt and germs around to another area and spread them out so it looks clean. Sure the water will be very dirty when you dump it but just imagine how much crap is left. If you are only after the superficial clean look then a rented machine is for you. If you are looking to do it the right way the first time then call a pro. Their machines are super powerful and will penetrate all the way down to the padding with ease. Their machines also have tremendous sucking power to remove almost everything where rented machines leave a ton of crap in the carpet. Imo Rug Doctor is one of the worse. Why?? They are the most rented. You have no idea how good the machine is that you are renting. It can look ok on the outside but how do you know it is functioning correctly inside? No way to tell till you get it home and use it. Then you may find out it has a weird **** smell left from the last user that is now in your carpet. Loading and unloading these things are a pita as well. I use to rent these things years ago and I would not even touch them after I saw what people were actually cleaning up. Yuck!!
