Hello,
I am the original owner of a set of Polk Model 10 Studio Monitor speakers from 1985. These speakers have the SL-2000 tweeters. I just moved into a house with hardwood floors, window shades, tall ceilings and my room is very very lively. The sound of the tweeters is VERY bright and can be painful at times, not really painful but is to much. I need to calm down the highs.

I am using some nice Onkyo Integra 308 Pre-Amp and the monster 504 Amp with the Polks. I am into Vinyl and use a Denon 103 Moving Coil Cartridge. The bright sound is really bad on CD's but with playing records it is much warmer but still way to BRIGHT!

I called Polk and they said they have a newer version of the Sl-2000 that is not so bright sounding for $60 each.

I need to know what year this change happened, the person on the tech line said it might be 1999 but not sure. I have seen many sl-2000 on Ebay with the date of 1990 and was not sure if that was the newer version.

Also, do you guys know of a better tweeter I can use in place of the Sl-2000?

THANKS SO MUCH

The replacement tweeter is a RDO-194. it is a better tweeter but give it some time to break in befor you judge it as well. I am also wondering on the amp you are using, I know nothing about it but I am wondering if this is part of the problem of your speakers sounding too bright.

also tell polk you are a club member when you order them you will save some coin.

    Welcome and good luck,

    Larry.

    Peabody,
The replacement tweeter is the RDO-194 as Larry said.
They look totally different than the SL2000. I have attached a picture of the new tweeter, so the SL2000 you are seeing dated 1999 are still the original technology SL2000.
FYI: The RDO-194's should be around $48 with the Forum discount and free shipping.

the first is the RDO-194..the second is the SL2000

Peabody, I feel your pain. See if you can find some cheap thick rugs, and maybe some wall hangings.... that is if your SO lets you redecorate a bit. If you want to get more serious, there are a lot of acoustic treatments out there you could cover the whole room in.

The SL2000 can be a very bright tweeter, and a little harsh on poorly recorded stuff, as you noticed. In a live room I can definitely understand how it could be a bit much.
