Sansui SP-3500 speakers

Starting a new thread--essentially a continuation of this thread...

While picking up a pair of Polk Monitor 10A's via local Craigslist sale....while I was there, I'm not sure why, but I also picked up another pair of speakers--these are another old pair, but I was intrigued by there almost church like grill. Anyway I thought they looked neat so in that respect I can't lose--Definitely have a vintage look to them and the grill is made from wood and has a slight curve to it. Talk about pushing my luck with the wife though :eek:

A bit shorter than the 10A's but heavier probably by 10-15 pounds.
They are Sansui SP-3500, a 4 way design with a real wood veneer that is in pretty good shape-Again few nicks or scratches here and there-but can't complain too much considering. The grill is completely intact except for one small piece chipped, but its still on so repairable without visual blemish-just a tiny drop of wood glue will do.

I Didn't find too much info on them yet (but did find an old ad) or much in a way of their value either. I haven't even had a chance to hook them up (still hidden for now )

Anybody know anything about these? How do they rate? And how to get the grills off?

Very cool! I've always loved the old Sansui speakers. I've never heard that model though.

My first "real" pair of speakers was a pair of 4-way Sansui's with, IIRC, 14" woofers...very similar to these ones. They got stolen 5 or so years ago, along with a bunch of guitar equipment, when one of my old apartments got broken into.

I wish I still had them...

edit-The grill on mine was basically the same as that. It was just held on by little velcro squares at each corner of the grill. They were kind of tricky to get off, so I usually just left them on. I don't know if yours is the same or not.

There's a pair of SP-1500's for sale on my local Craigslist.

I was thinking of picking them up for kindling.

I guess we'll see if that was worth it or not once I hook them up and give them a listen.

Was Velcro even around in the 70's?

One of the 15" woofers is blown. Gosh dangit!!
Reads open with a meter (that and the surround is coming off of the cone).

OK, should I try to return these (if even possible), or should I spend (I don't want to call it invest) an additional $50 for an available replacment woofer from eBay???

Is it worth it? Thoughts?

By the way--no velcro in these--it had 6 small black screws holding it in place---Very small and hard to see.

Is the replacement original part for this? $50 for 15" woofer is not too bad if it's in good condition (surrounds, cones, etc.). You need to pay shipping for it also? Shipping is what scares me when buying speaker drivers on eBay but make sure he ships it in good packaging if you choose to buy it.

Yep original replacement--its actually $20 + $30 :eek: for shipping--for $30 it had better be packed extremely well. Well $20 assuming I'm the only bidder.

Well I decided to jump on it-I guess its just easier then trying to return them.
I was the only bidder--I sent a request for a total with a note about alternate shipping options-Hopefully I can get a lower shipping rate if nothing else-esp since the seller is only about 90 miles away.

Using the FedEx calculator with an estimated size and weight--it would be less than $10, and thats end of next business day and with FedEx picking it up from a residence. I realize the seller may have to account for packaging and that's OK, but I think $30 is too much to not try-too many ebay sellers gouge the buyers on the s/h costs regardless of the actual shipping costs. I think I paid about $25 to ship a pair of LSi9's.

Well 3 days later and a 2nd request for a total I finally got an answer from the seller. So they accepted my offer to send a FedEx label (where I would pay shipping myself), but then said that they would still apply a $15 fee for " the handling fee of 15.00 still applies to cover boxe time fees etc... "

Well that doesn't make it worth my time to bother-not to save $5 net.

What the hell is wrong with people these days? First of all with my sale it will be the 5th sale the guy has ever made on eBay, so he is not doing this as a business reselling like a middle man who needs Handling fees. Secondly, the USPS Flat Rate shipping includes the cost of the box, so ultimately the guy is selling "his" stuff but is charging a $15 fee for "his" time?? There was nothing in the listing or shipping details that indicated that Handling charges were included. I mean he started the listing at $20-if he really needed the $15 then he should have started the listing at $35. I told him that I really didn't have time for games like that and that I would just pay as per his listing and then made my payment (and I opted for the insurance as well).
Yes I am aware that if I wasn't wiling to pay what was in the ad then I could have passed on bidding-but still, its more about the BS response I got. The thing better be packed to withstand an atomic blast and a flood for $30.

This is the same BS I see in some other listings where they allow for local pickup of items, but charge a fee (usually in the line of $10-$20) for the 'privilege' of local pickup. I'm seeing more and more each day why eBay gets a bad rep.

Look in each corner and you will find a black phillips head screw. Turned CCW to loosen. Total screws 4. Then gently pry from top or bottom to remove. There is also some velcro thats holding the grill to the speaker. I have had a pair of these speakers since the early 70's. They sound great for music or home theatre. I hope this helps.

I am hoping that it didn't take him 3.5 years to figure out how to remove the grilles...but hey...your response...she's better late than never eh?
