Alright...I've been overcome by the upgraditis. My wife is going to think this is worse than Swine Flu if I'm not careful. I'm about to purchase RTA 11TL's from a Polk Club member to replace my Monitor 50's in my HT. I am also going to have to upgrade my CS1 center channel. I got an email from someone I spoke to a long time ago that had Polk L70's. I'll get pictures tomorrow, but when I asked how much (Figuring it would be too much), she basically said, "What are you looking to spend". I was like, HOLY CRAP. I am just delving into the vintage speaker realm. Would I even have a need for these? I'm guessing it would be SUUUCH overkill to keep either the RTA 11TL's, OR the LS70's as surround speakers in a HT system. What are my options? What would you do with them. I am currently using an ONkyo 606. FYI, I'm very low on money, and have a 2 year old that sucks up all my money. Buying both, upgrading or adding a second system is not really an option. Thanks,

Pycroft

Congrats on the upgrades. No advice except to stay away from SDA's as they lead to trouble.

Keep the speakers that you like the best. Sell the rest and upgrade your amp with the money you make. You'll thank yourself later.

What's the going rate for LS70's? I don't want to offend the person, but the cheaper the better. I have no knowledge of these speakers? Also, what is the typical opinion on which is the better speaker?

    Thanks everyone...

You don't have too many at all! There are plenty of forum members' collections that would put yours to shame!

One does not own SDAs.... They own you!

+1 for upgrading your amp. At this point it sounds (oooh, pun) like it's the weak link in your system. Also.... don't piss your wife off - no good will come of it if she grows to dislike your hobby.

Nguyendot...I know that it's not a lot of speakers, but considering my situation it is. I know some people have a home theatre, 2 channel rig, all the bells and whistles. I have a 5 speaker home theatre, and that's it. I wasn't looking to expand, and it seems I'm purchasing two sets of speakers that will work as fronts in a home theatre. I'm only a public school teacher, and don't really have the money to purchase both...so I'm trying to work out what to do. I can sell what I have and use the RTA 11TL's as fronts, and the LS70's as rears, but again, that seems like such overkill. I guess I can pick up both, and resell one set.

Regarding the LS70's...the guy is looking for 325 dollars and it comes with an Adcom ace 515 AC enhancer. No idea what the idea is of that, but it sounds like a good deal. I may have to take out a second mortgage :)

    Any comments?

    Thanks all,

The Adcom ACE 515 is a pretty high quality line conditioner to clean up the power from the wall.

I know exactly what you mean by "too many speakers" at a certain salary.
The best advice I can give is:

Be Patient... Only buy on a great deal... Include your wife and your toddler... make this a hobby and an experience, not a pain, for yourself and your family.
I purchased the whole set of a Polk Audio RM6600 with a PSW-350 for $150. That's more than I spent on my receiver and my RTA-11TL's combined, and everything is in perfect shape. Thirftstores, yardsales, craigslist... Estate Sales... Look at places that people just may not know what they have or, if they do, they want it to go to a new home where it'll be cared for.
This doesn't have to be an expensive experience. As a matter-of-fact, it's been much cheaper for my wife and my 2 year old son to spend a few hours on Saturday mornings perusing yardsales and thriftstores for audio equipment, kids clothes, and vintage wares (to sell online) than it would be to do most anything else for a few hours on a Saturday. The best thing that can happen: You score something great to replace an already great component that you can sell or you find something you know you can sell for a better price. The worst that can happen, you spend hours with your family... It can be a win-win. Also, you can get in on the bragging rights for the lowest price paid for "X". I ot my RTA-11TL's for $50... Last week someone said they got theirs for $20... And I'm sure that someone has scored a pair for free...

? Harmon Kardon AVR 55 (dead; replacing with Onkyo TX NR-616)
? Polk RTA 11TL's (FR and FL)
? Polk TSi200's (RR and RL)
    ? Polk CS10 (Center)
    ? Polk PSW-350
    ? Grado SR-60i Headphones
    ? Fii0 E5 headphone amp
    ? iPod touch (8 gig)
    ? iPod Classic (80 gig)
? Mac Mini (as media server)
    ? xbox 360

As a reference point, a member here is selling his LS50's for $150 local pickup and I bought my LS90's on Ebay for $400 shipped (very well, so shipping was quite expensive). I actually won them with a bid of $200 with the understanding that shipping would be $200.

I love my LS90's btw, and think you would be quite pleased. They are very nice in my HT rig and excel at 2ch (music). I drive them with both an Onkyo TX-SR606 (HT) and a Carver TFM-35 (2 ch).

Or you get to the point that you're using gigantic floor standers as rear surrounds. That's always fun.

Oh man.... don't give me ideas...

A dampening mat between the sub and the glass, and go to town.

Ideally.... stack two on each side of the couch to reach the necessary height.

Bonus points if they're piano black for that added class. 4 Mirage Omni S10 Prestiges, anyone?
