Hello from Southeast Minnesota:

Hope I am posting in the right place here.

Anyway, I am new to the polk forums and excited to be here. I just got my first polk audio speakers last weekend. I bought the TSi500's. While not TOTL in the polk family, I will say they are the best sounding speakers I have owned in a long while.

These replaced some klipsch KG 5.2 that I had grown tired of looking at and listening to. In with the new polks and out to the shop with the old klipsch.

I am using these with a Marantz 2240 for now, while waiting on a McIntosh hand-me-down from my father-in-law. I don't remember the model number, but I do know it is a solid state receiver. It should be here in a few days, so pretty excited about that one too! Then of course the Marantz will move to the shop. Now If I could talk the wife into a new TV for the house, the shop might become a nice place to hang out. :D

So, that is my setup and my lame attempt at an introduction.

Thanks

Brian (polkfan45)

Thank you all for the warm welcome. I think I will be spending a lot of time here collecting advice; looks like a good place to learn from. I did not have much luck on another forum, but I won't mention the place just to be polite and respectful.

I have a question for everyone though. I listen to music from artist like Mark Knopfler, Jackson Browne, and the like. Will the McIntosh and the TSi500 be a good match for that kind music? I mean, the Marantz and the 500's sounded great; so I am assuming the Mc will be even better, considering it was a free-bee, I really couldn't see going wrong trying it out. I can return it and find something else if needed. Not a big boomy bass fan by any means by the way, I get enough of the boom from the kid's honda and the 4X15 setup next door. I wish that car would blow up and burn down... :o

Not sure how the Mc stands up to the Marantz or vise-versa, I know they go for a lot of money on the auction sites, a lot more than my beloved Marantz that is. Tips? Advice?

Thanks for the welcomes again and future advice.

    Brian

    Welcome to the Club!

Mix and match your gear and see what sounds best to you. Try not to get caught up in what someone else thinks about how your gear should sound. Try it out and decide for yourself. Its fun to listen to as many different setups as you can to start to develop a preference and go from there.

Post some pics when the Mac gets there and have fun.

Welcome to the club.... is the plan right now to stick with 2 channel?

I would try both receivers with your TSi's and whatever amp sounds best, move the other one out to the garage. Be sure to post back with your opinions on the sound differences between the amps.

Good point, I ran into that in another place I used to haunt, but that could just be bad karma ;)

The Mc might be a wash though. I was just talking to my dad-in-law and it has some issues that he was not aware of. It has been sitting for many years and he thinks it may need some new power supply caps and some other tinkering. I'm not to broke up over it though as I really do like the way this Maranzt sounds on these 500s.

I did find a Sansui G-7700 that I am welcome to try out for a few days before I buy it, so I thought that was pretty cool of the seller to offer. I do like the looks of that receiver, but SOUND is all that matters! It will have to be miles better than what I hear right now.

I'm going to try out a few options over the winter and see what works best for me, that is for sure; but so far, I think the 500's are keepers for now.

They even sound great on my old Sanyo Plus 55 receiver. I thought that thing was doomed to bad sound, who knew it just needed good speakers. LOL

Thanks again for the tip. Listening to Eric Clapton on the 500's now, hearing things I missed on the old setup. Very Cool!!!

    Thanks

    Brian

Well; I have the HT all done with no options for other speakers right now. When I finished the basment, I put in wall speakers and ran all the wiring behind the sheetrock so I am limited there, plus the TV is built in above the fire place and all the gear is up there too. I might upgrade the wall speakers someday, but for now they will have to do. I did all this before I cared about sound :( If I had it to do over again, I would not go with the wall speakers or the build in so far up the wall. I'll post a pic so you can see what I am talking about... just have to figure out how to post pictures now :o

So, to answer your question (now that I have ran off with the mouth again) : yes, just 2 channel for this system. Well, maybe 2.1 if I find a nice polk sub for cheap and can slide it in under the WDS (wife detection system). I am already watching the bay for refurbished one in cherry... Oh crap, I'm hooked...:(
