Hi, I just bought a pair of mm6501 and a pair of mm521 speakers, right now I'm running them from my sony headunit, and they distort when I turn up the volume at 3/4 of max volume.
I thought they just would not sound too high because of the low power of the headunit.
is this normal?, if I buy an amp (4 x50W RMS) would they not distort??.
thanks

HU are a crappy source of power for speakers. If you listen carefully you notice that the distortion would start around 40% of max volume from the hu.

Getting an amp will solve the problem. 4x50watts will be fine, but 4x70-80 watts would be better.

The MM's are are nice speakers, they actually deserve a better HU. Just an idea for down the line. For now getting an amp would be good.

Head units are horrible power sources. They make around 10 watts per channel real world despite what the ratings say. Like arun said, youre running out of clean power really quick so the MM's are getting fed a lot of distortion and are faithfully reproducing that distortion.

Getting a 4 channel amp will GREATLY improve your sound quality. For those speakers Id look for something in the 75x4 range.
