Maybe F1 is referring to what the woodguru posted.

Or, maybe both after I went back and re-read the posts.

I was saying that with "tongue in cheek" for the most part but it is true that F1 basically deduced the fact that a $2,500 pre-amp is a bit out of my league.

    I have a VTL 2.5 in front of a $300 TFM-35 for Pete's sake.:o

F1 was responding to Woodguru who may have passed on what he thought was some good advice. I'm not doubting his recommendations as I have no experience at that level of A-list equipment. Chances are, unless I win the lottery or the universe just decides that I require it to complete my mission in this life, I probably never will. I have champagne tastes and a MD 20/20 budget.

Frankly, I hope to find a much better amp long before I upgrade the pre. This is a really nice piece of gear.

I am however looking for more suggestions on tubes to try in it

Any and all suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

Ummm....the gear you're mentioning is a bit out of his price range.

As for the rest, it's your opinion, not fact.

not all that unexpected from a dealer, its very easy to make one brand seem better than another in a demo you control.

the part about buying the best you can is good advice, you have a great pre-amp, now just watch and wait, research for nice amplifier to match. Dont get caught on the up-grade train, you will spend more in the long run and have less time to listen to the magic your rig can produce.

As I've said before the VTL 2.5 is a really great preamp.

I really have my eyes set on a VTL ST 150, I would imagine that synergy would be great and used ones are within my grasp. Maybe by fall.

I loved my old VTL 5.5 even though the phono section was a little loud. That being said, I think I like my BAT VK-3ix SE better.

certainly one of the best ways to ensure some synergy is to stick with the same pre and amp designer. I once found this rather boring but have changed my perspective with time. I do presently use different brands in the Rabbit Hole but that rig is quite unique and the speaker extremely hard to drive, Wolcott built amps and some speakers I do not believe any pre is available and no more amps are presently being made as Henry Wolcott is battling age and all that brings.

no matter though V as you have kicked your tires pretty good with this set-up, it must of been fairly good for you to have stayed a bit with it. Luke Manley is into hi-end sound, like others in the high-end they build only very good to great gear so I would think your plan is solid, always nice to someone gain experience and then raise their own bar a bit.........its one of the secrets whispered in the HOLE, empirical evidence is quite a trump card.

The VTL 5.5 just didn't synergize well in the rig I had it in. I was shocked because of the steller reviews it got as well as reading consumer reviews. Funny thing is the VTL 2.5 sounded awesome!!! Pretty odd eh?

Yeah, I think that's why the BAT won out in my system as well. The music sounded forced at times and less natural with the 5.5.

I had rolled some tubes in during the short time I had the 5.5 and that didn't help at all. Not saying it isn't a good piece but it just didn't work with the gear I had at the time.
