Velodyne doesn't just make Subwoofers...

They also make a HiRes LIDAR--Pretty cool stuff.
Check out the Download tab and the YouTube and Video sublinks.

This link has a review and some video of it in action.

Radiohead's Music Video for "House of Cards" was shot completely with Velodyne's LIDAR.

I wonder what Velodyne gets out of it...

The LIDAR (essentially a laser radar) is currently being widely used by aerospace and military (precisely mapping and inspecting 3-D objects, measuring distance to various points of those objects, etc.)..

What do you mean-what do they get out of it?-They manufacture the product-they're not just applying their name to an OEM.
That's like asking what does Velodyne get out of manufacturing subwoofers, that the subwoofer concept is already widely used in Movie and Home Theaters, Cars, and ...blah blah blah...and that there are plenty of other subwoofers out there already.

Here's a link to their History and Vision page.

Here's a short blurb on their intended usage:
"Velodyne continues development and manufacturing of advanced lidar sensors for automotive, military, mapping and surveying applications. " .... "The HDL-64E is also in use for ground truth testing, military autonomous navigation, and mapping/surveying applications. "
